Tom Savage from Cardinal O'Hara in Philadelphia has committed to Rutgers. He is the biggest skill position recruit to ever commit to the University. He chose Rutgers over offers from Georgia, Miami, Louisville, Tennessee, Florida State, and Michigan. To say this is a big commitment would be an understatement. THIS IS HUGE. Savage verbal a coup for RU <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -- Tom Savage recently returned from a recruiting visit to the University of Georgia. On Saturday, a coach from Alabama called him. When the star quarterback at Cardinal O'Hara High School finally whittled down his college choices to five -- the original list looked like a weekly Top 25 poll -- Georgia, Miami, Penn State, Louisville and Rutgers were the last ones standing. And he's going to Rutgers. Times have clearly changed. "I went down and visited Georgia. It was awesome," Savage said. "Great campus. The coaches were awesome. But when I looked at Rutgers I realized they were building something special and I want to be a part of it." Yesterday was one of those moments Rutgers football fans may want to have cryogenically preserved. Savage, rated by Rivals.com as the No. 24 player nationally, gave a verbal commitment to play for the Scarlet Knights starting in 2009. Flanked by his parents, Linda and Tom, and Cardinal O'Hara head coach Dan Algeo in the school's auditorium, Savage said the "family atmosphere" at Rutgers made the difference for him -- along with the relationship he built with head coach Greg Schiano. "You see a lot of schools and people treat you as a package," Savage said. "You're going there to play football and then they send you off to the pros. I want to build a family relationship there so I can be there forever."</div> and then this tidbit <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Savage's competition when he arrives in the fall of 2009 -- though he said yesterday he was looking into possibly enrolling at Rutgers in January -- will come from Chris Paul-Etienne, Dom Natale, Jabu Lovelace, Steve Shimko and incoming freshman D.C. Jefferson. Natale and Lovelace will be seniors then.</div>

He was good enough to put up 800+ yards in 6 games last year, while playing on a broken foot. He was good enough for 20+ schools to offer scholarships, including the aforementioned UGA. And he was good enough to be the first player selected to the Army All American Game next year. Suck it.

Tom was at the RU Spring Game today and received a standing ovation as he walked to his seat. I think he was interviewed by News12 NJ, so you might see him on TV later tonight.

Tommy doing some recruiting at the Spring Game yesterday: <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>PISCATAWAY — Bernardo Nunez figured on waiting until the fall before picking his college. Maryland and Miami, Virginia and Pittsburgh, the schools keep sending in offers and the 6-foot-3, 232-pound blue-chip tight end out of Hoboken knows such a loaded list deserves some serious scrutiny. But then Nunez came to Saturday's spring game at Rutgers. And sat next to Tom Savage, the mega-star quarterback out of Pennsylvania's Cardinal O'Hara High whom Rivals.com says is one of the 25 best prospects in the country and who Friday said he wanted to be a Scarlet Knight. "Now, with the way he's talking to me," Nunez said, with a nod at Savage, "he makes me want to just say, 'OK, it's Rutgers.' "</div> This could be an insane class
Rutgers' QB of Future Pays Visit <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>May 4, 2008 -- It wasn't difficult to pick out Tom Savage from the other top quarterbacks on the field at Rutgers Stadium yesterday. You just had to look for the guy throwing the tightest spirals. Rutgers hopes that becomes a familiar sight in years to come, Savage, who will be a senior at Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pa., in the fall, already has verbally committed to the Scarlet Knights and was on his future campus yesterday at Football University, a training camp for elite high school players. "I was here last year, but this time, it's different," Savage said. "Last time, I was confused as to what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. Now, I know this is where I'm going to be soon. I didn't think everything would change so quickly." The 6-foot-3 Savage is considered to be one of the top recruits brought in by coach Greg Schiano, and yesterday, he stood yards away from construction site for the stadium's expansion, as Rutgers tries to become a consistent national power. Savage figures to play a crucial role in the team's future. He spurned schools with more established football programs, such as Miami, Georgia and Tennessee, to play in Piscataway. When Savage arrived last month to the team's spring game, he quickly was recognized by fans who began chanting his name as he made his way through the stands. "I was surprised by how many people knew who I was," said Savage, who added he had been to the stadium eight times already. "I look around here, and I see what they have already done and I can see what they want to do. I want to be a part of that. They're going to bowl games every year, and I think I can come in and continue that." He didn't intend to commit as soon as he did, but wanted to get the process over with, which was fine with Rutgers.</div>
