<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>You're not talking about all the same good/great defensive players that lead the Celtics to a 24-58 record last year, are you?</div>

About 75% of the celtics roster are new to the team this year. so i guess knowing something about basketball isn't a pre-rec to becoming a mod?

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>ok...so lets see...

once KG signed then james posey and eddie house signed, then perkins and powe actually became relevant, then pierce and ray were actually able to save some energy on the offensive end so they could play defense...then cassell and pj brown signed...

NONE of this happens if KG doesnt sign here...so, yes, it is ture that KG SINGLE HANDIDLY TURNED THE CELTICS AROUND.

    thank you, thats all.</div>

ok...not sure how to respond to something that is not only untrue but stupid to-boot. KG was TRADED to the celtics. The Celtics have 8 NEW PLAYERS since last year. KG could have gotten the MVP for motivating his team to play good D, but not DPOY. Thank you, thats all

I think I know more than enough about my own team, thank you.

If you really want to bring up the new players the Celtics brought in, please enlighten me how any of them are "good/great" defensive players in the NBA, apart from Posey and Garnett.

Ray Allen is not really a great defender.

    Eddie House is useless.

    Glen Davis rarely played.

PJ Brown and Sam Cassell are irrelevant as far as the whole season is concerned.

So where are all these great defenders?

Pierce, Rondo and Perkins were 3/5 of the starters here from last season. Why weren't they as good last year as they were this year?

Tony Allen is a very good defender, but with his knee problems, he hasn't done much this year on D.

Leon Powe has done a great job this year, even though undersized, but I really doubt he's the reason the Celtics went from top 3 worst teams on defense to top 3 best teams on defense within a one-year span.

If you can please lead me to the answer I'd greatly appreciate it. Heck maybe I'll pass the prerequisite next time.

Does anyone feel like acknowledging that the C's brought in one of the better defensive minds in the NBA this past offseason?

The point I'm trying to make is 1 player, KG, does not change a teams defensive capabilities by himself. It just doesn't work like that. Which is why i believe that he should not have been chosen DPOY. The celtics hired new personnel, have an upgraded roster, and basically have 3 hall of fame players. And besides, if he changed the way the entire team plays D like everyone here has been saying that he does, then how come he could never do that for Minnesota??

Completely agree, and they didn't even have to trade any players to acquire him

He's reason #2 for the turnaround. KG was the one who brought the enthusiasm and lead the team by example on D.
Take a look at the effort Pierce has given this year, it wasn't there last year and you can't tell me any assistant coach is the reason why Pierce is playing much better D. It's KG's contributions beyond the stats as I mentioned previously.

so what your saying is there shouldnt even be a dpoy award because everything is team team team

hows this, marcus camby shouldnt win dpoy because he gets hepled by the rest of his teams terrible d...if it wasnt so easy for opposing players to drive past melo and AI then he wouldnt have so many opportunities for blocks and therefore he isnt doing it by himself

No, everything for the CELTICS is TEAM TEAM TEAM. Not the same for the nuggets because obviously no one else plays defense there. if your not being sarcastic like i think you are and your being serious about that argument, then look up cambys career stats for all the teams he was on. He has always been a great shot blocker and rebounder. I want to know why everyone thinks that KG is the sole purpose for a teams defensive turnaround, when he never could do that in Minny. I think thats about enough proof right there that the KG DPOY is BS. He got OK numbers on a really good defensive TEAM.

He has okay steals and blocks, but what about opposing PF's FG%??
ignoring that stat for the sake of convenience?

Oh definitely, but I don't think the NBA is about to start giving out "Defensive Player of the Year" awards to the coaches. [IMG]

I understand and I agree with that (one player does not change a whole team's defensive capabilities), but KG is a big reason, and in my opinion the number one reason, why the Celtics defense made a 180 degree turnaround.

He obviously isn't the sole reason, many factors contributed to that.

No doubt. But it is the Defensive Player of the Year award and that means we're talking about individuals here. The only thing that's annoyed me is that the argument for Garnett has almost always been about the team's defensive turnaround. There's no denying that he played a big role in it. But that's a team turnaround for a reason: the entire team played a role in it. That includes new players, existing player development, and better coaching. Attributing that change exclusively to Garnett not only gives him more credit than he deserves, but it also overlooks what others have done.

For the record, I'm not saying KG definitely shouldn't have been the DPoY. I just think, if you're gonna give it to him, provide some better reasonings that actually proves that he was the best individual defender in the NBA this past season.

so disregard his leadership role in the team turnaround?
I mean don't ppl constantly argue about the merrits of great players being able to lead their team to greatness?
Didn't KG come in and lead by example on the defensive end by playing hardnosed D, practicing really hard and getting players like Paul Pierce and Ray Allen to put forth more of an effort on the defensive end of the court via his intensity in practice and on the court?
shouldn't intangibles be noted and rewarded too?

If thats the case i'll ask my question that everyone has been avoiding again. WHY COULDNT GARNETT LEAD THE TIMBERWOLVES TO BE A GREAT DEFENSIVE TEAM? if his intangibles are what got him the DPOY then why didnt he get it in Minny???????????

cause you can't make chocolate chips cookies with cow dung.

to make something you gotta have something.

in Minny they had inexperienced rookies, injuries or overpaid garbage.
Look at how they did the one year he had good talent around him.

KG is the ultimate Robin, does everything really well, plays with intensity, practices hard, leads by example.. just don't ask him to be Batman and take over down the stretch. Hence my aversion to giving him the MVP.
DPOY?? yup... no problem because he's not asked to take any crunchtime shots

One year he had Sprewell and Cassell and and almost won the whole thing. Imagine if he had had at least some talent around him throughout his career. (its amazing to think about it)
