<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (NetIncome @ Apr 30 2008, 04:36 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>It was only last August that Donnie Nelson called Harris, Diop, Ager and Howard the "future cornerstone of the franchise".

--Now, they have lost three of the four players to the Nets, along with two draft picks that would have added to the "future cornerstone" and seen the fourth player admit to illegal drug use, look awful in the playoffs and be criticized for having a party after the most critical loss in the series.

--They lost to a division rival that is younger, more athletic and likely to get better while they get older. Their roster includes ELEVEN players who will be age 30 or older by July 1: Jason Kidd, Erick Dampier, Jason Terry, Dirk Nowitzki, Malik Allen, Devean George, Tyrone Lue, Eddie Jones, Jerry Stackhouse, Jamal Magloire and Juwan Howard. The only players under 30 are Josh Howard, Brandon Bass, Juan Jose Barea and Antoine Wright.

--They now have the biggest payroll in the NBA, bigger than the Knicks. Their free agents are all minimum salary type guys. They owe $100 million to Kidd, Dampier, Stackhouse, Terry and Jones...

--They took on $11 million in extra salary and luxury taxes as a result of the Kidd trade, for which they got nothing.

--They now have to make a decision on extending Kidd, who looked every day of 35 years old. Reports just before the trade had the Mavs giving Kidd a gentlemens agreement to extend him for two years and $20 million. Kidd has said recently he wants to play til he is 38 and retire as a Mav. Do the math...that means he wants a two year extension.

--They wound up firing the NBA coach with the highest winning percentage of active coaches.

In regards to D'Antoni.... IMO if he leaves PHX he will probably end up in Toronto. Where he has contacts and friends and also players that fit his style. im 100% sure collangelo will ask him if he wants to join his team.

wow epic post, that's going in my sig. I'd be baffled if anyone could defend the Kidd trade for the Mavs at this point, and especially to how the season has unfolded and how the following years will progress.

Randy Galloway, ESPN Radio: "What would you have done differently?"

Avery Johnson: "Maybe give Devin Harris the ball a little bit earlier, maybe started developing him a little bit earlier."

Avery wouldn’t answer whether he approved J-Kidd trade directly, but in doing so, communicated that he was not in favor of the trade (as almost everybody already knew). His answer was basically that he didn’t want to throw Jason Kidd, Mark Cuban under the bus by saying what his thoughts were.

    Exactly right.

Devin Harris setting all those career highs with the Nets got Avery fired.

Now the players all think he is costing them money.

Listening to ESPN Radio in Dallas via XM tonight, I found out a number of things regarding the trade:

    1. Nowitzki pushed it hard, from beginning to end.

    2. Cuban handled everything about the deal. Neither Donn Nelson nor Avery Johnson were involved in the deal making.

    3. Johnson didn't like the deal...said so.

    4. With few exceptions in the Dallas media, they all loved the deal. Lots of sour grapes now, with guys saying Harris wasn't getting them there either. (Mavs were 30-13 when Harris went down 01/24, 21-22 through rest of the regular season and playoffs.)

Firstly, that has to be the fastest Kidd's ever canned a coach. Impressive even by his standards.

Secondly, I can't think of a good place for Avery right now. He's got his issues as a coach, and probably needs a season off to reflect on them. Kind of reminds me of Byron after he got fired. I don't want him on the Nets - he seems to have all of the same problems as Frank, and I'd prefer to try and get D'Antoni anyway.

I'm wondering what Diop's relationship was like with Avery.

Anyone think this will effect Diop's returning to either New Jersey or Dallas, or going to another team (possibly a team that hires Avery)?

I think Avery yanked him in and out the lineup a lot. Not sure there is any great feelings there.

Anyone feel like Avery is just an improved version of Frank?

Either that or Avery is the same as Frank, but just has better players?

Frank seems to have loosened up this season, but I can't help but think of them as similar (in size/stature and coaching style).

I think Frank is far superior with his basketball knowledge... also has a more masculine voice.

Avery has him in player experience.

Yeah but his voice is so damn annoying. I woundt be able to tolerate it much. And he tends to force things on players, in some cases it that might help, but in most it just ruins everything. He has to loosen up a bit lil general.
