Granted, its only day 2 of minicamp and it doesn't mean much... Shortly after the NFL Draft, SMU coach June Jones visited Wade Phillips. And he made a bold statement ... The Cowboys' best draft pick, Jones insisted, would be fifth guy they took. That would be Boise State CB Orlando Scandrick, whom June faced in the WAC in his days as Hawaii coach. "He's not better than June Jones thought he was, I'll tell you that," Phillips said of Scandrick. "I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him, but he said, 'You know who the best player you got in the draft was?' And I said no, and he said, 'Scandrick.' He said he's going to better than all of them you got. I said, 'Really?' "He said, 'I'm telling you, I've seen a lot of DBs and I was on the field seeing him,' and talked about his presence on the field during the game, and you don't see that (on film). He thinks he's going to be pretty good." If you've watched the kid through two days of practice, I think you'd agree. ___________________- You can't tell by watching this weekend's workouts. Mike Jenkins, who is adjusting to playing off the receiver after primarily being a bump-and-run guy at South Florida, has had his ups and downs. Orlando Scandrick has been pretty darn good on a consistent basis, earning an unsolicited mention from Emmitt, who was impressed with the fifth-rounder's feet and ability to break on the ball. If the veterans stay healthy and Pacman Jones stays out of trouble, there will only be room for one rookie in the Cowboys' dime package. Scandrick understands that Jenkins has a head start because of draft status and doesn't anticipate any sort of rivalry brewing between the rookie corners, who are rooming together this weekend. "Mike's my boy," Scandrick said. "The way we look at it is we want to be Cowboys forever. Sooner or later, we'll both be starters and hopefully Pro Bowlers." ______________________ So it seems Jenkins is struggling when he is asked to play off the WRs. That's sort of expected since he pretty much played up at the LOS in college. But the Scandrick news is awesome. I thought he was going to be raw and take some time to develop. Sounds like he could contribute this year, even..... God damn the CB depth we have in Newman, Henry, Jones, Jenkins, Scandrick, and Ball.... Its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than last year's Newman, Henry, Reeves, N.Jones, Oglesvy group.
Damn that's great to hear. This might be the 2nd late round pick that really shines for us (the previous one I'm referring to is Nick Folk). I'm not worried about Jenkins learning to play closer, but would it be terrible if he played up on the receiver on man-coverage?
