<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (NetsDaily)</div><div class='quotemain'>In an interview with the Nets’ Matt McQueeny, Gana Diop says he likes the team: “I feel comfortable here. Being here, being with coach, real cool, teammates are cool. I feel pretty good being here” and he thinks the team has potential, too: “I love the team. I think we could have made the playoffs but we were in a tough position with a trade”. However, he says what all free agents do, “I’m just going to do what is best for me and my family” and admits returning to the Mavs is an option.</div>

[IMG] Desagana Diop Interview - Matt McQueeny - New Jersey Nets

Good for him, for doing what's best for him and his family. I'm assuming that means he'll take the most money offered to him. If so, with the Mavs way above the caps, I'm guessing he'll be staying close to home.

I don't mind overpaying Diop because that then leads to better stuff in his homeland. He's a great player and sounds like a great person as well.

I don't mind paying for Diop because we need his rebounding, and solid defensive fundamentals.

I hope we don't just let him walk, we could use him in a S&T at least. TOR could use him, we could package him with RJ in a trade to them, or maybe just straight up for Kapono.

I don't mind overpaying for Diop, cause he can be Horford back up that we desperately need.

I think we really should keep him. He's part of us being the "younger" team that we are, and he and Harris have good chemistry together obviously. He's good on defense.

Keep him, but don't overpay too much. A little overpayment won't hurt, I guess.

a 26-yr old 7-ft, 280-lb space-eater with a 7'7" wingspan and a 9'5" standing reach who rebounds and blocks shots and has a reputation of being a good guy with a good basketball IQ...yeah, we need to at least match whatever offer he gets...but maybe put a condition about maintaining a certain weight...

When's the last time we could say that? I know what you're getting at but unless he gets a silly pay day we should strongly consider bringing him back if the offer is reasonable because Diop is another solid bigman who at the very least could be a real nice trading chip down the road or be the backup we need in case Sean never gets his act together. Stro is a temporary piece and while Boone and Diop could make for a nice rotation at the 5 spot until we get a semblance of what direction this team is moving in.

If the Nets were willing to pay Magloire $4 million, they will probably offer Diop $4 million but for how many years? Dallas COULD offer him $5.5 million, the MLE, but would they give him the full MLE when they are looking to re-do their roster and have no first round picks and no LLE? They are in cap hell right now and will be for the next year or two.

He might opt for returning to Dallas even if the offers are similar or less, but I doubt it. He may never have this opportunity again. It's more likely someone else might offer him more than Dallas can. You read bloggers' comments around the league and lot of them think their teams should make an offer.

And do remember, while he is a solid defender, his career high after seven years is NINE points.

I'll agree with the OP that while I want him back it wouldn't hurt too much to lose him to free agency. He does defend well and is good with the put backs. He just isn't a perfect fit with the team and is limited offensively.
