"It’s going to hard for Carlisle and Donnie Nelson to rebuild much of this roster over the next few years, since the Mavs are over the salary cap and lack a first-round draft pick. Could his connections with Indiana pay off? Rumors are constantly circulating about Jermaine O’Neal, who played for Carlisle back when the Pacers made it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Once the season is over, we’ll finally start to have a clearer picture of what each team wishes to do an which direction they’re headed."

If your looking long term, it's a bad idea to get O'Neil for several reasons you all know. But again, the Mavs are not looking long term. Cuban wants to win, and he wants to win now. Assuming Josh Howard will be included to get O'Neil, where will this leave Dallas? I'm just mixing it up here, but will we see a frontline of Damp, O'Neil and Nowitski (probably at 3)? The Mavs will have a better half court set with this lineup. But what will happen to speeding up the tempo to suit Kidd? Nowitski can run the floor. My question is, can Jermaine still run the floor? I'm not going in to the details with the possible trade. But hopefully the Mavs can add another shooter or at least a swingman. Key is still Jason Kidd. If Carlisle makes the same mistake as Avery did in not utilizing Kidd, the Mavs are in trouble. Time is against the Mavs. Carlise has to show Cuban that he will be able to maximize Kidd and win. Carlisle will be on a very, very short leash. Don't be surprised to see Carlisle being shown the door early if Cuban doesn't like what he sees. Would you give up Howard for O'Neil? At this point, I would do it. Cuban has come this far and there is no turning back. You don't go halfway and turn around. If this does become available, I don't see Cuban not pulling the trigger.

    So...

    pg: Jason Kidd
    sg: Jerry Stackhouse
    sf: Dirk Nowitzki
    pf: Jermaine O'Neal
    c: Eric Dampier

It looks pretty good on paper, but how much does O'Neal have left? He's been plagued by injuries for the past couple of seasons, and sat out pretty much this entire season. When he did play, he only looked like a shell of his former self. IF he can get healthy and get his legs back, this would be a great deal. But if he doesn't, then the Mavs are just going to be screwed presently, and in the future. Mark Cuban will also have to shed out a lot of money from his own pocket due to the amount of luxary tax the team will owe.

If you ask me, personally, I don't think Jermaine will ever have the seasons he has had in the past. Nobody is sure if he'll even last to play 50 games. But like you said, time is against the Mavs. This may be a risk they will have to take, just to piece together one last run

Wow, I'm not sure where to start.

First of all, Dirk at the SF sounds scary to me. Second, trading away Josh Howard for Jermaine O'Neal doesn't sound like a good idea.

Third of all, trading for O'Neal just has bad idea written all over it, considering he's never healthy.

Not to mention Dallas and their whole roster isn't getting any younger.

Like I said, long term, it's a bad idea. But Cuban is looking short term. If O'Neil can come in healthy, Dallas will instantly become contenders. at least for next season. Last shot time for Cuban. If O'Neil is healthy for next season, I'd say go for broke. Cuban already did.

They are the Mavs, not the Knicks...and this would be a Knicks move.

That doesn't cover the fact that New Orleans is younger, improving, and already better than Dallas currently, even if they had O'Neal.

I'm sick of hearing Jermaine's name in rumors. I don't think anything gets done and honestly, I'm afraid O'neal's career might be over.

I don't see the point in putting O'Neil in the 5 spot. I'd rather have him as a 4. Like I said, hopefully they can get another shooter or at least a swingman with a decent jumper. But I agree with you that they can do better than Jermaine. Any possible trade in mind?

So you don't want O'Neal as anything but a 4, but you're willing to move your franchise player out of his natural 4 position? That makes sense.

If the Mavs does land O'Neil, I would move Dirk to 3. It won't be that much of a change for him. Dirk has always been better facing up. So let him. But it doesn't mean he can't post up anymore. O'Neil doesn't have the bulk against the big men of the west, so I'd put him at 4 and let Damp stay in the middle. Contrary to what you said, it makes perfect sense. Unless you would use O'Neil off the bench. Which would make no sense after giving away your starter.

"...combined with Dampier, it might be as good a deal as the Pacers could find for J.O"

    Link: http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2008/5/11/507...neal-possibilit

This is a whole new ball game with Damp included. This will leave the Mavs an even bigger hole in the middle. Dampier is the only legitimate center they have and I just don't think O'Neil at 5 will be enough for Dallas especially on the defensive end. Hmmm... Offensively, the Mavs will have more options. I just don't know with this one. And Bass at 3? Maybe. Unless they put Stack at 3 along with Terry at 2. But after Bass, options run out. So it would look something like this (assuming the others are back):

    PG - Kidd/Lue
    SG - Terry/Wright/Jones
    SF - Stackhouse/Bass
    PF - Nowitski/Bass/Allen
    C - O'Neil/Magloire

A pretty solid starting lineup. The bench is a big question mark though.

How the hell did I miss this thread? No to O'Neal. I want to send Josh Howard packing, but I have a feeling we'll regret trading him for Jermaine. Next rumor.

It's not a first choice for me either. Hopefully they can get a better deal than this. Howard is prematurely going into a downward spiral. Temporary? Not really sure. I would want to see what Dallas can get for him. But if the Jermaine O'Neil is the only scenario left, I won't be surprised to see Cuban pulling the trigger on this one.

Howards is only making 9M compared to JO's 19M LOL... How many more players would the mavs have to add to get the deal done LOL

Mavs imo are better of sending Terry (8M) + Stack (6M) + Juwan (1M) for JO (19) ... it also has a better chance of working salary - wise

Thats because Indiana over rates JO... They were the ones who gave him his monster contract... they were also asking for both Odom and Bynum for him LOL

Like I said before, solid starting lineup but a questionable bench. Indiana won't deal O'Neal for Terry, Stack and Juwan. A deal with Josh (9.9M), Juwan (1.2M) and Stack (6.7M) would work better. Mav's lineup will look something like this:

    PG: Kidd/Lue
    SG: Terry/Wright/Jones
    SF: Nowitski/George/Jones
    PF: O'Neal/Nowitski
    C: Dampier/Mbenga/Magloire

Like I also said, they need to pick up another shooter or a swingman with a decent jumper.

Erm.. this would be a better move then trading for JO BUT...

The Kings already have a player similar to Josh Howard in John Salmons... So i doubt why they'd do this trade... When they'd be losing a player to get a player similar to one that they have already
