Rodriguez hit his 497th career home run while Damon drove inthree runs and played some solid defense in left field as theYankees completed a doubleheader sweep of the Tampa Bay DevilRays with a 17-5 victory. New York won the opener of the day-night doubleheader, 7-3. Rodriguez moved within three home runs of the historic 500 markafter hitting his major league-leading 33rd home run. His firsthome run since Monday capped the scoring for the Yankees, whobuilt a 7-2 lead and then scored five runs in the bottom of thesixth to turn the game into a rout. Before Rodriguez's two-run home run off Jay Witasick landed onthe netting beyond the left field fence and in front of theretired numbers, Damon played a prominent role in New York'seighth victory in 11 games. Starting in left field for the third time this season, Damonopened the game by battling the wind to catch a fly ball byAkinori Iwamura. An inning later, he made an even better catchas he made a diving stop on Iwamura to end the second andpreserve a 3-2 lead. Damon, who had just two RBI in his previous 17 games, had an RBIgroundout in the second but still had more contributions as thegame continued. The Yankees took a 7-2 lead on a two-rundouble by Wil Nieves in the third but Matt DeSalvo and BrianBruney combined to surrender three runs by the time there weretwo outs in the sixth. Brendan Harris represented the tying run against Luis Vizcainobut he lined out to Damon, who made another running grab. Inthe bottom half, the Yankees ensured they would not have tosweat out a win. They saw 47 pitches from Witasick and sent 10 men to the platein their second five-run inning of the doubleheader. Damonsparked the big inning with a double to left that scored Nievesand Melky Cabrera. Damon moved to third on a groundout by Derek Jeter and scoredNew York's 10th run on Bobby Abreu's base hit. The 33-year-old Damon, who is in the second year of a four-yearcontract, went 2-for-4. He snapped a career-high 0-for-20 slumpFriday night, rested in the first game of the twin bill andthen recorded just his third multi-hit game since June 9. Yankees crush Devil Rays, complete sweep <h3>NY YANKEES 17, TAMPA BAY 5 (2ND GAME)</h3>BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Alex Rodriguez moved closer tohistory but it was Johnny Damon who also played a starring roleon Saturday night for the New York Yankees. Rodriguez hit his 497th career home run while Damon drove inthree runs and played some solid defense in left field as theYankees completed a doubleheader sweep of the Tampa Bay DevilRays with a 17-5 victory. New York won the opener of the day-night doubleheader, 7-3. "Today was a big day for us coming in," Yankees first basemanAndy Phillips said of the sweep. "We certainly needed to winthis (doubleheader) today." Rodriguez moved within three home runs of the historic 500 markafter hitting his major league-leading 33rd home run. His firsthome run since Monday capped the scoring for the Yankees, whobuilt a 7-2 lead and then scored five runs in the bottom of thesixth to turn the game into a rout. "He (Rodriguez) had great at-bats," Yankees manager Joe Torresaid after his team set season highs in runs and hits. "Justright from the first at-bat, he looked very comfortable." Before Rodriguez's two-run home run off Jay Witasick landed onthe netting beyond the left field fence and in front of theretired numbers, Damon played a prominent role in New York'seighth victory in 11 games. "We definitely felt that scoring was definitely going to besomething we needed to do," Torre said. "It was great." Starting in left field for the third time this season, Damonopened the game by battling the wind to catch a fly ball byAkinori Iwamura. An inning later, he made an even better catchas he made a diving stop on Iwamura to end the second andpreserve a 3-2 lead. "He was phenomenal tonight," Phillips said. "He made a coupleof huge plays for us and drove in some runs. He stepped up forus." Damon, who had just two RBI in his previous 17 games, had an RBIgroundout in the second but still had more contributions as thegame continued.
