The Hawks have reached an agreement with former Seattle general manager Rick Sund, who will be announced Wednesday afternoon as the team's new general manager.

The hiring of Sund, 56, wraps up a nearly four-week hiring process the Hawks kept under wraps.

Sund, a consultant for the Sonics this past year after being reassigned by a new ownership group in April 2007, will take over for Billy Knight, who resigned after six years with the franchise, the last five as general manager.

Sund has over 30 years of NBA front office experience, including stints with Milwaukee, Dallas, Detroit and most recently the Sonics.

A native of Elgin, Ill., Sund played at Northwestern before starting his NBA career with the Bucks, spending five years there before going to Dallas as the Mavericks' player personnel director.

He worked with the Mavericks the longest, from 1979 to 1994, helping guide them to the playoffs six times and a trip to the Western Conference finals in 1988.

He spent six seasons in Detroit before being named the Sonics' general manager in June of 2001. Sund held that position for six years, he engineered the trade that brought All-Star swingman Ray Allen from Milwaukee for Gary Payton in February 2003, before being replaced by Sam Presti.</div>

I don't know alot about him, basically I hear that he's picked a bunch of centers and was the one who robbed Milwaukee into getting Ray Allen.

He did a good job getting a bunch of players that meshed pretty well together for that 2005 playoff run, that was nice. We'll see what he does in Atlanta.

    Unbelievable hire.

Rick Sund is one of the best basketball minds in the business. He was handcuffed by an owner who was not willing to shelve out a ton of money in Seattle and he was able to put together a talented and deep team in each of his seasons -- while consistently coming out on the better end of any trade that he was involved in.

He really only made one mistake in the draft and that was drafting Mo Sene in 2006. Robert Swift would have been a very good big in this league had he not tore his ACL in 2006 and Johan Petro is about as good of a center that you are going to get with the 25th pick in the draft. There aren't too many bigs picked behind them that truly make the Sonics regret drafting those two with the exception of Al Jefferson.

Atlanta has not been known for making a ton of competent moves in the past but that is all about to change. You have a winner in Sund.

The problem is that Atlanta's ownership is just as cheap and dysfunctional as Seattle's was.

IDK if their cheap, they did give Joe the 70 million dollar contract, and they did trade for Mike Bibby, they also offer Josh Smith 5 year/ 45 million last off-season.

I'd say certain parts of the group are cheap. And thats the main reason they're dysfunctional.
