Those expiring contracts still don't amount to what LA offered. LA also threw in some picks and players with potential.

Chicago did not want to pay tax and wanted to throw in radioactive contracts, from the sources I've heard.

    It was a joke.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Lavalamp @ Jun 5 2008, 01:36 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Two first rounders at about 28 isn`t worth much.

Well the Lakers gave up Kwame Brown, J-Critt, and two really late first rounders. The 2008 is the number 28 pick, and the 2010 pick will most likely also be a 25-30 pick.

Dallas definitely would have as they gave up the number 21 pick this year, and most likely a better pick in 2010, add in Brandon Bass and Diop (expiring and young) with KVH, and IMO that`s a clearly a much better trade than the Lakers. They could probably get it done without Bass and include someone else, as they are including better picks and Diop who is a young center.

    Dallas would have:
    Devin Harris
    StackHouse
    George
    Dirk
    Gasol

with Dampiere, Josh Howard, Terry all coming off the bench.

It`s also less than what Dallas had to give up for Kidd.</div>

Was Dallas willing to do this before though? Because it wasn't until they saw us get Pau that they gave up a lot for Kidd.

I don't know anything behind the scenes, whether Dallas would have been willing to do the trade, whether the Memphis GM liked it, or who the Memphis GM even contacted, which GMs knew about how available Gasol was, which GMs were low-balling, which GMs thought the price would be too high to make an offer, etc.

Anyway I just think the Dallas trade I wrote would be better for Memphis and would have improved Dallas.

I think all of the 7 teams that I pointed out had enough expiring contracts could have added something better than 2 really late first rounders and J-Critt.

That's not my point. GMs had the capability to offer more, but because of their owners or lack of foresight/will they didn't. Dallas seems to be an example of this.

Like the article stated, the deal was done way before the deadline so nobody really had started calling anyone.

The deal made absolutely no sense other than cap space for Memphis and what good will that do with no star other than Gay to bring in talent.

The deal made plenty of sense, GMs had months to offer more. They screwed up.

In what ways did the deal make sense other than for cap space?

I'd like to see someone provide me a link with a trade better then that at the time the deal went down.

The Grizz are losing money like crazy and are about to be sold. They get two first round picks, and Critt has some kind of potential at least.

Not everyone has expiring contracts like that.

^^My Dallas trade was an example, and I showed 8 teams that had the equivalent of what the Lakers had in expiring contracts (Miami and Orlando had 2 options each).

Well I have to agree with the Grizzlies owner on this one, the Grizzlies should have shopped Gasol more, and should have called every team in the league. The Lakers low-balled him and landed a top PF in his prime.

I think the League generally low-balled the Grizz, and there was not much else for them to get.

So to add onto the loosing end, you trade away someone who people come to watch?

Two 30th - 28th draft picks and a rookie who IMO, was overrated because he was in LA.

Why can you not just admit that the Lakers got lucky as hell and robbed Chris Wallace which got them a championship ring in the process?

Why can't you admit that not every team has expiring contracts or that they don't want to give these contracts away along with those "overrated" first round picks?

The Lakers are lucky there are so many incompetent GMs out there, that's a better way of phrasing it.

^^ Well we don't know how incompetent the Grizz GM was and how many teams he contacted.

We can at least say the Grizz GM was foolish not to shop Gasol longer and look for something closer to market value, as the Grizzlies owner said.

Gasol was shopped for months, it is unrealistic to think there were that many better offers.

But like everyone posted, other GM's offered and the Grizzlies had turned them down. And like Heisley admited, they should have tried harder to find talent which means that Lakers came knocking before other teams did and Grizzlies were stupid enough to pull it off.

Also, you can go around almost every team in the NBA and add up at least to that amount with one year or two years still left on their contracts and by the looks of it, Grizzlies aren't looking to win anytime soon anyways.

What offers? Hawksfan said they turned down that deal because Horford + Pau, was better than Horford + Childress, at that particular time to them (theoretically in their mind). Tell me about these other great offers that got denied.

4 months into an NBA season is not enough to get an offer from someone else? Face it, many GMs in the league were soft.

By your own admission, you said you can only think of comparable deals, not better ones. There was no deal on the table superior to LA's.

If the Grizz want to sell their team as soon as possible, expiring this year matters. They are losing business quite rapidly.

How many major deals where former All-Stars had happened before the Gasol deal? Hawksfan stated one and I remember being tons of rumors before the year but none in it. I don't even remember Gasol complaining in those months coming up to the trade.

I said I can think of comparable ones without even adding more talent than the Lakers did.

Grizzlies will be shut down so I don't know why expiring or not expiring matters. Who wants to see Kwame Brown and Hakim Warrick in the post. I sure in hell wouldn't pay a dollar to see that.

Do you not notice how you and a few Laker fans are the only ones saying this was a good deal? It goes down as one of the worst moves in Grizzlies history and definately a top ten of all-time at least in my books.

Some times teams wait to make offers, and we have no idea what offers were on the table. Some teams realize later on that they need to make a trade to make the playoffs or become a contender. If the Grizzlies continued to test the market, and as it approached more towards the deadline they probably would have gotten more serious offers.

Dude, people gave you several scenarios that would have been better for Memphis.

If Memphis really wanted to save a lot of money, they could have given Gasol to Miami. For example, Davis and J-Will have a combined salary around $15M and both are expiring. Tell Miami they want a 1st rounder next year and a 2nd rounder this year. And they can probably send some baggage to Miami to equalize the salaries. Hell, if they played with them, they could have added on either Swift or Cardinal in exchange for someone decent.

Wallace is a retard. Cmon, $9M contract, Javaris Crit and 2 late first rounds? Are you kidding? You don't trade away all-star big men for $9M expiring contracts and 3 late 1st round picks.

First, this is incredibly vague. Provide me with some links instead of a rumor mill.

No you're not reading my posts very clearly then.

I don't have to think it was a good deal. It was a good deal compared to the softies afraid of LT.
