Doesn't take a whole lot for the ratings to go up from last year. Wasn't it one of the lowest rated Finals ever? I know I lost interest once the matchup was set, I never wanted that series. So, I'm not shocked that the ratings went much higher for this years game one. Personally, I think the ratings will likely increase tonight. Game one was a pretty good game, and I'd imagine a lot of people might watch just to see what Kobe goes out and does, and also to see if Paul Pierce is healthy. But hey, an 8.7 is nothing to be ashamed about, it's not like this is the freakin' Super Bowl.

yeah the league can probably never expect to get back to "jordan numbers" so an 8.7 on a Thursday night isn't that bad. I imagine it will be higher tonight primarily, because it's a Sunday.....and it could probably even be higher if they started it earlier............

I think this is the first finals I've watched/am going to watch since the Nets played San Antonio.

I usually watch at least the first couple games every year. If their not even competitive, I don't bother. Like last year, I stopped watching after game 2 and sporadically tuned for the last couple games.

Last year was the worst, at 6.2 % of all TVs were tuned in to the Spurs vs Cavs. 2nd worst was 2003 with 6.5% with Spurs vs. Nets.
The best year was 18.7% in 1998, Bulls vs. Jazz. 2nd best was 17.9% with Bulls vs. Suns in 1993

However it seems since Jordan`s last game with the Bulls, the league hasn`t been able to recover.

    Regular Season Network TV:
    96: 5%
    97: 4.7%
    98: 4.6%

    04: 2.4%
    05: 2.2%
    06: 2.2%

We're trying to climb back from the depths of Spurs-Cavs... It won't happen in a single year. [IMG]

Well, the league hasn't been the same ratings wise since Jordan left. (Bulls) It's much more than just 1 Finals. Comparatively all the Finals from 99-08 have gotten compared to the Jordan years.

From 1987-1998 the Finals ratings were at least 12.3%, from 1999-2008 there hasn't been one that reached 12.3. 8 of the 12 years they had at least 15%.

Starting the game at 9PM EST doesn't help your ratings. Tipoff doesn't take place until close to 10PM. I also don't see much marketing going into it on the TV until the actual day of the game.

I'm not sure, but it probably takes place when the NBA negotiates their TV deals.

People in LA. A 7 O'Clock start time would suck for them.

A 10 O'Clock start time really sucks for people in the EST.

Yeah, I don't get it. They aren't comfortable with West Coast people missing the 1st quarter, but they're totally comfortable with East Coast people missing the 4th quarter.

At the moment, I don't mind the late start time. Since I currently work 3-9pm CST, I only miss, at most, the first half. But on days like today, pushing it to an early afternoon start would have made more sense.

they start it late, because the late time slot on the east coast is supposed to be a time slot with a lot of viewers.............with that being said they need to bump game time up an hour for the finals.......

So are they going to start the game earlier in LA to accomodate East coast viewers?
