Mullin wouldn't match a max offer for either hes just saying it to deter other GMs from pursuing them.

I mean that would be stupid if somebody like Memphis went and just offered Monta Ellis the max knowing that the Warriors would match it right away. What I mean is: a team could sabotage another team's payroll by forcing that team to pay extra for a guy they may not even really want. It's like, "oh the warriors are getting a bargain for Monta Ellis? Okay, well we don't want to pay Monta Ellis more than that amount to get him, but we'll offer a bigger contract just so that the Warriors organization feels obligated to match that and therefore pay extra. Less caproom for them means more leverage for us in the general FA market."

We need big men who can run and play defense. Monta certainly could play D, but not under the current system. If push came to shove, Monta would be more expendable. But max deals should be for reserved for potential all stars and superstars and neither appear to be that right now.
I totally agree the max would be too much. It'd be like giving Ben Gordon/Leandrinho Barbosa and Tyson Chandler/young Jeff Foster the max amount.

You've now made a commitment in offering a max deal to a player you know isn't worth it, and there's nothing to stop Golden State from changing their mind and just saying "no thanks". Now suddenly the tables are turned and you (the other GM), are the one getting screwed. I don't think that'll happen. But of course some team could very well truly believe Monta is worth more, and be willing to pay it.

He garnered a lot more attention around the league last year and that should only increase this year. Look at the shooting guards in the All-Star game last year: Wade Joe Johnson Richard Hamilton Ray Allen Kobe Bryant AI Brandon Roy He's not in Kobe's class, but Monta's stats match up favorably with any of the others (he struggles in FT% but makes up for it in FG%). Frankly, he easily could have been selected over Roy. All he needs now is a little further refinement of his game and name recognition, which as I mentioned he is in the process of earning. Allen and Iverson will be fading soon and there may be some openings. While I personally love Biedrins' game, he's just not flashy enough to garner attention, and under Nelson at least he's not getting enough minutes to maximize his stats, nor are the Warriors fully utilizing his offensive abilities.

Yinka, one year deal probably wouldn't work, because the player has the option to turn it down. It's really curious since three 2003 draft class players asked for the max for only 3 years instead of 6 or 7 years. Maybe they get bonuses when they re-up or maybe they give themselves options if the franchise isn't run very well.
