Hernandez, making his 10th career plate appearance and first of the season, hit the first home run by a pitcher in Mariners history with the second-inning blast. The last grand slam by a pitcher also was at Shea Stadium, when Dontrelle Willis - then of the Florida Marlins - homered against the Mets' Jose Lima on July 7, 2006. It was the first grand slam by an American pitcher since Steve Dunning of the Cleveland Indians off Diego Segui of the Oakland Athletics on May 11, 1971.

While covering home on a wild pitch, Hernandez had his left ankle crashed into by a sliding Carlos Beltran, knocking the righthander to the ground with two outs in the fifth inning. Hernandez was attended to by team trainers before attempting a warm-up pitch. He hopped on the injured leg while following through on the pitch and had to be helped off by the field by two trainers, unable to put any weight on the leg. Earlier in the game, Hernandez made history by hitting the first grand slam by an American League pitcher in 37 years, connecting against fellow Venezuelan Johan Santana.
