With the possiblity of the Hawks not wanting to pony up the potential 11mil a year Josh Smith wants maybe Minnesota cancan swing a sign and tradedeals with the Hawks?

    Hawks gets: SF/SG Corey Brewer
    SG Rashad McCants
    PF/SF Antoine Walker

    Minnesota gets: PF/SF Josh Smith
    Future 2nd Round pick

How it benefits Atlanta: Not wanting to pay Smith the 11mil a year, they get a good young perimeter defender with upside in Brewer, a perimeter shooter in McCants and cap relief with Walker's 9 mil coming off the books at years end and all for what pretty much boils down to a 2nd round pick. Not to mention it gets Smith out of the East so they won't have to face him as much...[IMG]

How it benifits Minnesota: Speeds up the timeline of rebuilding by adding a rebounder/shot blocker to help Big Al inside and fits the critera of what the Wolves front office wants young talent. Even though Minnesota is willing to not buy out Walker's contract because it drops off, what better option could they get with the cap room anyway, unless they were hoping to save it for an additional year and go after one of the big three (Bosh the more attainable out of himself Wade and LeBron) but seriously... Josh "Smooth" Smith would be a great addition to our young squad...and would get fans excited!

    T-Wolves potential lineup:

    PG- Mayo
    SG- Foye
    SF- Gomes
    PF- J.Smith
    C- Big Al

    niiiiiiiiice!!!!

sounds plausible, depends on what the Hawks are looking to do by NOT paying up for Josh.
you may have to toss in a draft pick (2009-11 some year in there)

How about if Atlanta drops the future 2nd Rounder, and adds Acie Law. And Minnesota adds one of our 2nd Rounders this year and one of our three 1st Rounder's for next year?

    making it:

Minnesota trades: Brewer, McCants, Walker's contract, #34 pick and a 1st Rounder next year for...

Atlanta trades: Josh Smith and Acie Law

wasn't law a lottery pick last year?
I don't see them giving up on him so soon, unless he's done nothing in practice to indicate he's going to be good.

Smith is a great talent, and as I said in the Mayo trade post, you win in this league with great talent. I wouldn't get to greedy about giving up what should be a mid-round draft pick in the next 3 years and what you proposed to get a guy who's at the cusp of being an regular all-star.

what I seen was Atlanta getting young talent for a player they might not intend on resigning. Smith is expected to want about 11 mil a season. With Walker's contract (9 mil) coming off the books after next year and two guys with combined contracts of 4.8 mil (Hawks are all about saving cash), Atlanta will be getting all that along with two picks...for a player they didn't intend on keeping and a PG that was supposed to be groomed to start until they got Bibby. Sounds like a win/win for both teams

yeah it could work, but you have to imagine if Smith is on the block, teams may pony up more than that and not ask for Law.
It really comes down to how much they like Law in you scenario.
They may want to add in Claxton and the 10 mil he makes over the next 2 yrs to the trade.

I see that but if Law is replaced with Speedy then Minnesota is pulling the 1st Rounder. it makes no sense to trade off Walker's expiring contract to pull in a 6 mil a year for the next three years. That was why Minnesota would be willing to trade a 1st Rounder in order to not pull back a bad contract

Atlanta is notorious for wanting young talent at low contracts...with this they get 9 mil cap room, two younf player's that fit thier system and two picks. Other than taking in a high contract stud I don't see many teams having a combination of all three (if they are willing to take on a big contract, they might as well keep Smith)

    good points.

perhaps they'd do the trade and not take Walker's contract at all thus getting young talent and a draft pick (of some sort) for Smith and keeping cap room for any future moves made this year.

    I like your thinking...lol.

I would love for that to happen, but in order to get Smith it would have to be a sign and trade, and with the combined contracts of Brewer and McCants being just 4.8 mil, Walker's 9 mil would have to work in there. besides I'm sure Walker would be a breaking point in any deal involving anyone worth a damn Minnesota tries to trade for.

I just really like the idea of J-Smooth in Minnesota running the floor with Al, Foye, Mayo and Gomes...nice foundation! And even if the trade did go through this way Minnesota still has another 2nd rounder this year and two 1st Rounder and a 2nd Rounder next year

I don't see Atlanta giving up Smith that easily and I see there being a lot of teams that would love to add 22 year old that average 17.5 ppg, 8.2 rbp and 2.8 bpg [IMG]

so I think you'd have to sweeten the pot a little.

can't let the Wolves get a talent like that for what amounts to cast offs/bench players and a salary dump. [IMG]

I hear ya. But Brewer is regarded as a good talent with a still high upside, McCants is young an can provide the perimiter scoring the hawks want and a couple picks.

What other teams can provide that kind of cap relief, young talent and at least a mid or higher 1st rounder without having to give back Atlanta a player with a large contract (which they don't want). With this trade the only downside is Atlanta trading a player they don't intend on paying for.

but I'm listening to what your saying....I know there will be offers. I'm just trying to look out for my Wolves and saw this as a deal that could benefit both teams.

    indeed.
I think a team willing to give up a solid young player, perhaps a draft pick and take on Speedy's contract could make the Move as well.

Say Memphis (Jason Collin's expiring 6 mill, Nick Lowry and this year's draft pick) or Chicago (Noah, future draft pick, Drew Goodon's expiring 7 mil), Cleveland (Draft pick and Wally S's expiring 13 mil), Pistons (Stucky or Maxiell and a draft pick, MyDyese's expiring 7 mil), Lakers (Odom and his 14 mil expiring contract, Farmar & Ariza and a draft pick)

    see there are possibilities [IMG]

If the Wolves want Smith, they're going to have to pony up a good deal IMO.
but then again, we're smart, dedicated NBA fans who wouldn't give up a talent like that for nothing.. not NBA GM's [IMG]

True, those trade possibilites could get some serious looks, I'm just banking that with ATL preferring to trade him outside the East...that would leave the Laker's and Memphis.

The Laker's might not get it done since they don't have any draft picks to offer and do they really want Farmar.

but Memphis bothers me. They have youth and talent, but trading Lowrey gives Atlanta a crowded backcourt (PG) with Bibby (definative starter), Law (are they willing to give up on him?) and Speedy (big contract= minutes).

I'm hoping it helps Minnesota just because we have plenty of picks over this year and next and young talent with cheap contracts to work with. They provide a nice combination of all three! Young talent, exp contracts & lottery area picks!!!

Once again those are all offers that would get serious attention, I'm just hoping not...[IMG]
