Shit the Atlantic division just got much tougher... But this Raptors-Pacers trade kinda forces us to make a big trade as well...maybe a Brand? Shit we can't fall behind make something happen Thron & Kiki ASAP. [IMG]

Interesting bit about why the trade has to happen July 1 and both teams will be drafting for the other.

    Ford-for-O'Neal trade almost complete
    Wednesday, June 25, 2008 08:28 PM

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The on-again, off-again T.J. Ford-for-Jermaine O'Neal trade talks appear to be very much on again, according to a published report on Wednesday.

The Toronto Star reported that the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers are very close to completing a trade involving the two injury-prone stars.

According to the Star, Toronto - which owns the 17th overall selection in Thursday's draft - will ship Ford and the pick along with center Rasho Nesterovic and another player to balance out the salaries in order to acquire O'Neal. O'Neal is owed $44 million over the next two seasons.

However, nothing can be finalized until Ford's base-year compensation tag comes off the books on July 1, the same day the NBA's one-week moratorium goes into effect. For that reason, the Raptors will make their choice in Thursday's draft based on what the Pacers tell them to do, according to the paper.

The trade is intriguing from the standpoint that the centerpieces - Ford and O'Neal - come with lengthy injury histories.

Ford was diagnosed with spinal stenosis - a condition that narrows the openings the spinal cord runs through - and has twice missed significant parts of a NBA season. He sat out the entire 2004-05 season with the Milwaukee Bucks following neck surgery and missed 13 games with a neck injury last season after Atlanta's Al Horford leveled him on a breakaway layup.

The 25-year-old Ford, who averaged 12.1 points and 6.1 assists last season, became expendable when his backup, Jose Calderon, emerged in his absence.

O'Neal, who averaged 13.6 points and 6.7 rebounds, played just 42 games for Indiana last campaign with a left knee injury and hasn't played in 70 games in any of the last four seasons.

So what if one team decides to pull out, between now and July 1st?

If they want to kill the deal, they'd just be sure one guy failed the physical.

haha great point. ESPN made this point too:

    JO was unhappy in Portland
JO was unhappy when they fired Isiah
JO was unhappy with Stephen Jackson as his sidekick
JO was unhappy with the pacers and wanted out

they basically said that he has the talent but its clear that since hes been the league, hes been complaining and his attitude is real problem and has not matured

on paper, its a great trade for TO. gotta give to their management. THEY MAKE THINGS HAPPEN UNLIKE NETS!!! grr...this ruined my day

Well Toronto is one of our rivals, and I didn't want JO on my team so overall I'm pretty happy that this went down.

A player with a nasty attitude is something the Raptors need desperately, but I don't think O'Neal has one. He is just outspoken.

I am shocked that some people still want Jermaine O'Neal on the Nets. His last good season was 03-04! You know who else had their last good season in 03-04? Jamaal Magloire!
