http://njmg.typepad.com/zzone/2008/06/jefferson-moves.html <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Some of you are upset, maybe even more so today, that Jefferson is gone. He has played in the Finals, been a big-time playoff performer, played hurt, worn multiple hats, had his role changed many times. But he had to go and you have to know that. The situation was different from Jason Kidd’s in that Jefferson wanted to be here. But it wasn’t working. He went from being an above-average defender to someone who cared about scoring and making All-Star teams and paying less attention to defense. The coaching staff wasn't happy. <u>There was some definite jealousy on Jefferson’s part for Vince Carter</u> and to an extent Kidd. Going back to last season, there were people in the locker room that thought Jefferson didn't need to have ankle surgery, that he abandoned them. Though, that's ancient history now. But Jefferson always wanted to be the No. 1 guy. He was for stretches this year and look what happened – the Nets went 34-48. He needs to be your third-best player to be successful.</div>
Great points, all around. If that's the type of player he's become, we definitely don't want him on the team. Peace out, RJ. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
i was a big fan of him from 2002-2004....not a fan of him ever since vince got to the team. i definitely felt a rift since day 1...and besides that brief period in 05-06, 1 of them has played great and the other sucked and vice versa. im happy to see him go. i dont like his whole attitude and persona. i hope the door hits him on the way out just so he can think about his past couple years. you guys think hell be booed when he comes back?

IMO Jefferson had to be moved. Even when he was in college he was never viewed as much more then an excellent athlete and although he has worked really hard to improve his jump shot most of his game still relies on his athleticism - which he is losing a little bit with each day and injury that passes. For me RJ went from one of my favorite players on the team to one of the least simply because he lost track of his role. During the 3 year run he was a phenomenal athlete, a great energy guy, a good defender, and an all around hard nosed player who knew he had a supporting role. At this point he is just another wing with a decent jumper, good athleticism, and the "I am an all star" mentality. Lets also not forget that little story about 2 months ago about him possibly having charges filed against him stemming from a night club altercation.
RJ's head got to big.. and thats not literally well i wish him well with the bucks... lets see what the nets can do!

I think the desperate attempt to regain credibility after we traded K-Mart lead to RJ unjustly being thrust into a role and contract that set the bar too high for his skill level. The injuries and lack of chemistry with VC over the past few seasons have also taken a toll on him.

Jefferson used to be cool, but eventually, he grew to be unlikeable and movable. Btw, welcome to S2, Kenyon Martian! Glad to have you here, I'm already enjoying your [lengthy] posts. Jefferson needed to go. The Nets are looking to start anew, and no one wants Richard's new attitude around, especially considering all the young guys we have on our roster. In reality, the Nets didn't lose much. Jefferson was never the player that could help you over the hump, and seeing as how the Nets are rebuilding, there was no necessity to keep him around. By trading Jefferson to the Bucks, we got ourselves a promising young player.
well it was time to go different ways... and thank god cuz frank put RJ as the #1 option... yet carter shoulda been... and VC was ok with it... now this is VC's team... lets go NETS but not hate towards RJ, ill cheer for him when he comes back to NJ even if he wearing a different jersey... at least he never quit on the team *COUGH* KIDD *COUGH*
What's going on here? Maybe I'm missing something, but why is everyone shitting on him the last few months. I don't get it. What "attitude" did he have? "At this point he is just another wing with a decent jumper, good athleticism, and the "I am an all star" mentality." Really? Just another wing player? This guy isn't a John Salmons or a Ricky Davis we're talking about here. RJ is one of the top 8-10 SF's in the entire league with championship experience. He put up 23 points, 3 assists a steal and 4 rebounds a game. All while shooting 47% from the field and 36% beyond the arc. I'd say thats more then decent. His defense slipped a bit, sure but I don't think he deserves all the hate. Especially when, of our former Big 3, he was the only one who never demanded a trade and wanted to stay. I will miss the guy, especially because I really wanted him to retire a Net. He got dealt to open up room for LBJ. Plain and simple. He'll have extra motivation against us and in general. I have a strong feeling RJ is going to be great next year. In fact, I'll save this post because (if he stays healthy) I will go ahead and make the prediction that RJ earns his first All Star bid next season.

I've always liked him up until this season, when he simply stopped trying on defense. RJ was good, but never all-star good. And with players like Josh Smith, Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis, and Tayshaun Prince continually getting better, I doubt we'll be seeing RJ in the All-Star Game. I also expect his numbers to dip, considering he'll be with Mo Williams and Michael Redd. Anyways, he'll fit in great with the Bucks, and their abundance of no-defense players.
I generally agree with what you all are saying about RJ, how his career progressed, how he's *maybe* a 3rd guy at best on an elite team, how he stopped playing defense and never developed enough of a repertoire to survive the inevitable decline in athleticism, etc. Just one point though: he wasn't trying to turn into a go-to scorer merely out of vanity. He was being groomed that way by the team. The reason they gave him the contract (which has gotten way too high!) is because they expected him to keep growing by leaps and bounds.
I think it all boiled down to him not being a good fit for the team. Not on the court, not off it, and not cap wise. VC and RJ were redundant. they did the same thing. and neither was a threat from the outside. You cant run your offense around 2 wings who need the ball and dont make teams pay from beyond the Arc. And with no post presence, it was too easy to shut this team down. We added shooting with this deal, while we didnt get the better end talent wise(at least as of today) we certainly balanced out our team, and become tougher to defend. We wont be 5th worst in the league in FG% next season
