Wow, just wow. I was totally addicted to both I and II. I love DND/FRP style games, and Diablo had it all. Their game engine was so cool because you could dodge enemy spells and projectiles, unlike traditional FRPs. As for II, people got into it so much they detailed all the algorithms for all the character types. It got to the point where there were formulas for how to create a fast cast sorceress, for example, by wearing all the right gear and putting your skill points in the right places in the tree. Another example is the tank sorceress, who basically was able to walk around slow as molasses and enemies could hardly damage her; the strategy was to attract as many enemies as possible and then rain down meteor strikes on the whole pack.
I played single player or LAN, never the battle.net version. It was fine. We also built characters to do Mephisto runs. He dropped most of the best loot. One build was a double-sworded barbarian; he'd run right to Mephisto, using whirlwind or leap and mostly ignoring the rest of the bad guys. Nearly kill him with the best swords, then switch weapons to massive magic find ones and finish him off, pick through the loot. Rinse, repeat.

You could try to do it alone I guess then you wouldn't have to share the drop, but only when I was quiting did I have a character that could take on Mephisto alone with multiple players on Battlenet.
Diablo 1 and 2 owned my soul. Although now I stick to sports games, I think I'll have to give this one a shot
Yep. Be sure to check the website regularly though. They will be adding things to it as we draw nearer to the release date.
I seem to remember there was something you could type into the chat window to make the game difficultly like there were 8 or 16 players even though you were playing solo. And that's the way I played it. I have a friend who I would play the game 2 player over the Internet, too. I also remember that I had the game on a 2nd computer just so I could start a multiplayer game and bring in "mules" or characters I made just to hold all the loot. It got to the point where I had a mule just for rings, another for swords, etc. Never, ever, found a stone of jordan, tho.
There was a variation of the fast cast sorceress that was funny as hell. Charged bolt was the spell of choice, maxed out along with the lightning skill that added to lightning damage. She could fast cast a bazillion of those puny charged bolts out there and they all added up to enough damage to kill things.

By now, tho, I've completely forgotten what that is, and what it does...
Stone of Jordan was +1 to all skills and +40 mana, if not more. The stone of jordan was massively easy to get in the battle.net game. It became a sort of currency - some suit of armor might cost you 2 stones of jordan in trade. People figured out how to dupe items and that kind of thing on battle.net, which is why SOJs were so plentiful. Never found one in the single player game. There are, of course, the real stones of jordan. When worn, you become the best player in NBA history (arguable) and win 6 titles.
Heh, I never really got into Diablo games and I doubt this one will change my mind. I played II for about 15 minutes, but stopped playing it because I hated the controls. I can't stand having to point and click where I wanted my character to go.
Man I was so into these games back in the day. The first one more than the second, because it took me a while to amass the money to buy it.
