The general consensus is that DR is a Chris Paul like talent.</div> I'm not sure where you are getting that consensus, because I've never seen a consensus opinion of that from people who's opinion I respect. </div> Well, I wasn't trying to be too literal. Most people seemed to agree that Derrick Rose has a good chance to become a great player, and he plays PG, not necessrily that he plays in the same way as Chris Paul does.

We have the type of players that greatly would benefit from playing with a great PG, particularly Deng and Tyrus, so I think using that as a reason to draft a PG isn't faulty reasoning.</div> As long as that PG is projected to be a NBA Superstar (or the guy with the best chance at becoming one). This is the #1 pick in the draft afterall.</div> I would agree with your sentiments if DR wasn't considered one of the most physically talented players in the draft. Everyone seemed to agree that with the top it was between two players, and him and Beasley were considered 1a and 1b. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (kukoc4ever @ Jul 3 2008, 11:42 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>3). Making other players is one of the most important characteristic of great players (maybe the most important), not some ancillary one that should naturally be subservient all sorts of other things.</div> But its true for all superstars. If Beasley is a superstar, then he'll make the other guys around him better as well. I'm not poo-pooing the pick by any stretch. I just hope that the rationale behind it is that Rose is the most likely to become a superstar, not a guy that's "won everywhere," has fewer character issues and is better suited than Beasley to make the existing personnel better. (if beasley is a star, then he will). </div> I agree that there seemed to be less 'downside' to Derrick Rose, which made him a safer pick, but in this case, the difference in talent between the two was small enough that it's not likely to be a huge issue, they both seem like they'll be really good. When I look at the possible negatives of the pick, I don't crack the nut the same way as you do, apparently. What I worry about, is that even in a best case scenario, at least three players on our team are probably going to have to be moved, and at least two of them will likely be someone who was handpicked by Pax. I kind of think of our team as an overgrown rose bush that desperately needs pruning, and if our roster isn't streamlined, everyone thing could implode on itself.
This one is so simple I'm surprised no ones mentioned it: VDN wants to play fast. He wants to run. Rose is gonna enable that much more so than Beasley. Then the secondary reasons come in: PG and C are the hardest positions to fill with above average players. When you have a shot at an elite player at one of those positions you take him unless the other player is a LeBron/MJ/Kobe sort of all world player. That said, I think we might have passed up a guy who can end up scoring anywhere from 20 - 24 ppg. Is he a LeBron/MJ/Kobe type of talent? I don't think he is...we'll see.
