<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Free-agent center DeSagana Diop on Tuesday gave a verbal commitment to sign a new contract to return to Dallas Mavericks, according to NBA front-office sources.

Sources told ESPN.com that Diop, traded by the Mavericks to New Jersey in February as part of the Jason Kidd deal, will receive the Mavericks' full mid-level exception in a five-year deal starting at nearly $6 million.

Diop cannot officially sign and the Mavericks cannot officially comment until July 9, which is the first day NBA teams can announce signings and trades after a league-wide moratorium on roster moves is lifted.

Diop was a key member of the Dallas team that toppled its in-state rivals from San Antonio and reached the 2006 NBA Finals. It was the franchise's first trip beyond the Western Conference finals.</div>

Signed for more than I would ideally give him, but a good signing nonetheless. Would have rather seen him be signed for around 4mil/year instead.

At least he provides some interior defense but I think we overpaid him, and with the signing of Gerald Green does that mean we are done for Free agency .. do we have any money left or are we stuck in this minimal-tweak phase in hopes that it will pan out.

He would have been a factor in the Hornets series.

Good signing and its always good to have defensive centers on your team.

I'm glad he's getting his payday. Nets are smart enough not to pay him that money.

Because they aren't in the need of his service.

I seam to be the only Nets' fan that wasn't impressed with him when he was in NJ. I think his length is his weapon, not skill. He is a good rebounder and he's a nice guy so I'm glad he is getting his pay day (and I'm really glad it's not the Nets that are giving it to him).

Hey I'm down for whatever pigeon-holds the Mavs further. That lottery pick in 2010 is going to be tops.

Ask yourselves this, would the Mavs be as desperate to get Diop if they weren't as restricted from the Kidd trade?

I wasn't overly impressed, which is why losing him doesn't really phase me at all.

It would have been nice to hook up a S&T tho, where we get picks.

They needed a big man and they got him Wednesday, agreeing to terms with former Maverick DeSagana Diop on a multiyear deal that starts at the full mid-level exception, an NBA source said. Most NBA executives expect the exception to be around $5.5 million.

They wanted a young, athletic and, yes, affordable player who might have unlimited upside. They got that in Gerald Green, a three-year veteran who has yet to fulfill his vast potential.
