Not sure why the NEts would help them out for expiring contracts - have to get something of value - found this out there

Mavs Want Diop To Be A Sign-And-Trade
    By Mike Fisher -- DB.com

An NBA source has informed DB.com to not jump too soon on the notion that the Mavs have exhausted the full MLE on DeSagana Diop, telling us that Dallas is attempting to instead work with New Jersey to swap the center in a sign-and-trade.

"(Dallas) has a financial deal with Diop (for the MLE-level money of about $5.7 mil for five years) but that doesn't mean it has to be for the MLE,'' the source says. "(The Mavs are) trying to avoid that.''

It would in fact be beneficial for all parties to attempt an S&T with the Nets. Diop gets his money either way. New Jersey would get something in exchange for the departing 7-footer. (Expiring contracts?) And the Mavs would get Diop and the freedom to use the MLE to pursue wish-list free agents like Corey Maggette, James Posey, Eddie Najera and others.

    A couple of notes here:

    * From what we are gathering, the Mavs would like to S&T with the Nets without forfeiting Devean George, who the team believes still has value here as a player.

    * That elevates Eddie Jones and his expiring as a prominent piece in any such deal.

    * We get re-confirmation from another source on Dallas' very high opinion of Boston free agent James Posey - and on the possibility that turning Diop into an S&T would free the Mavs to bid the MLE on Posey.

    * We get mixed reactions on Corey Maggette: thumbs-up on the talent, thumbs-down on the flakiness. ... and of course, maybe a pipedream all along. But he nevertheless represents the best quick-fix solution to what ails the Mavs.

    * A source tells us that Dallas' Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson are "burning up the phones'' in exploring ways of saving the MLE and of orchestrating three-ways to maximize their assets.

Much thanks to BabaBooey. Just posted it on NetsDaily. Thorn and Cuban again. Oh goody.

Cuban said the Nets deal cost him $11 million...that was before the Diop deal. Now he has had to overpay for Diop to bring him back. $31 million for a guy who never averaged 3.0 ppg in his career...and people thought $25 million for Collins was nuts?

Mavs don't have much else to give up in a trade except Shan Foster and maybe Bass. Stackhouse's contract or a George sign and trade would be needed to make the salaries work. So what could the Mavs give up to make it worth it for the Nets to agree to a sign and trade?

So it would have to be someone the Nets want, meaning someone under 7' tall, have a contract with fewer than two years running and making less than $5.7 million. Mavs would have to trade one or more players to the third team, then turn that player around for Diop.

The problem I see is that there aint many assets on that Mavs team who another team would want and who Cuban would want to give up. Stackhouse makes too much money. Jones has no value. George is an unrestricted free agent and oh God, please not him. Wright...been there, done that.

yeah, that's the problem here. Howard is the only one here who has enough value for the Nets to want back as far as I can see. Bass or Foster could be nice, but they don't make the cash, Bass wouldn't really have a spot here, and I don't think Foster has enough value. I'm guessing that they don't want to give up Josh, so that is probably why they're looking for a third team. Maybe they could move stuff to Chicago, and we give them Krstic, and Gordon gets S&T'd to us? has there ever been 3 S&T's in one deal before?

Dallas has nothing we want (that we could get) for Diop.

If they're going to do Dallas such a favor, they better ask for a draft pick. How about an unprotected 1st rounder in 4 years? :-)

Indeed, the story says Cuban and Nelson are looking for a third team, which people here seem to ignore.

I know I love making trades, but I cant find one here.....

Maybe Diop to Dallas(front loaded to make deal work?)
    J. Howard and Hassel to Lakers
Odom and Marcus Williams to Miami
    and Marion to NJ?

Could the Mavs sign and trade Wright? We are looking into those type of players so why not bring him back?
