<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (NOMAM @ Jul 3 2008, 11:22 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div><div class='quotemain'>Ok, FOMW suggested this trade a while ago and at the time I didn't like it. But I was thinking about it some more just now, and it could make some sense for the Nets to try and acquire him at this time. Some reasons why the Nets do it: - Shaq's contract only runs for two more years fitting into their 2010 free agency plans - He brings a veteran presence and the young players on the team will love him - The Nets have some spot up shooters to surround him with in Simmons, Yi, Anderson, Nachbar(if they bring him back),Marcus(if they keep him) - He can provide some rebounding, post-defense and post-offense - He likes Vince - He's marketable - The comedy value would be great The negatives against trying to acquire him would be his age(past his prime) and the amount of games he could miss. But the Nets have some depth in the front court to withstand a Shaq injury in Lopez, Boone, Yi, Sean, Anderson So what about a trade of: Krstic (Sign and trade) Swift Hassell for Shaq Suns would get a young center who the Nets don't want to commit long term to because of their 2010 free agency plans. They would also get a backup big and an expiring contract in Swift. Nets lineup: Harris/M.Williams Carter/CDR/Ager Simmons/Nachbar Yi/S.Williams/Anderson Shaq/Lopez/Boone Maybe they could package Simmons, Boone, and Marcus + pick(s) for a better SF. And then use their MLE and/or LLE on a backup PG and third string center.</div> #1. are you high #2. even if he gets traded here he wont come and play. #3. he wants a ring
Vow! contending for the ring while waiting for LeBron? I love the idea. Suns won't give up Shaq though. Harris + Carter + Shaq with shooters around them is a Championship contender though.
This is crazy. First of all Shaq and Vince are not enough to contend for a ring in the league today. Especially not with a bunch of young players on their team. There is no way that they could get past the Celtics, or Detroit. Its arguable that Miami will be a top team again this year too. I found it funny that someone suggested they include KVH in the trade for Shaq. The Suns don't have time for KVH and his half hearted play that always seems to show up come playoff time. Every teams goal is to win a ring. With Shaq's contract up in 2010 would the Nets believe that they could get all the right pieces within two years to win a ring? Absolutely not, especially since there is no guarantee that Vince will be with the team after this upcoming season.

KVH has a non-guaranteed contract for the 2008-2009 season. That means right after he is traded, he can be waived and the team has instant savings on their cap and in real dollars.

At least with this trade they would save $10million to help them go after a good FA like Magette. Lets face it, SHAQ isnt what he used to be

I already mentioned that it was mostly a mental issue with Krstic, but after playing on his knee last season and having another off-season to work on it, he should have come a long way in getting over it by the start of next season. Swift was part of some productive benches with the Grizzlies and at the very least is a 6 million expiring contract which has some value as a tradeable asset.

The Suns traded Shawn Marion for Shaquille O'Neal and are in win now mode. Nash is getting old and a lot of their role players aren't exactly young either. Steve Kerr pushed for that trade and there's no way he's going to give up on the Shaq experiment after one year or he looks like a total dumbass.
FWIW, the deal was pushed by D'Antoni and Sarver. Kerr was most reluctant even though he pulled the trigger. They won't admit this, but I think in the back of Kerr's mind he knew the team's window was closing (probably closed now). And by doing the deal, and not paying Marion some large extension like I know they were against, it just adds another expiring contract in 2010, where they'll have 30-35M (or more if Amare if opts out) when Nash/Shaq's/Bell's contract expire. I doubt they'd want to ruin that.
