http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9368 The Miami Heat may have surprised the nation by taking and keeping Michael Beasley with the second overall pick in the NBA draft, but it's no surprise at all to learn that they're now working hard to try and acquire a point guard. Dwyane Wade was lobbying hard for OJ Mayo, who was ultimately the third pick and landed in Memphis via trade, but the Heat opted to go with the player they thought was the best available instead of drafting for need. It seems more and more likely that the Heat are going to have to trade Shawn Marion to get the playmaker they need, likely to be Chicago's Kirk Hinrich, Philly Andre Miller, or perhaps Golden State's Monta Ellis, though Ellis is not a point guard by nature. The problem for the Heat is that if they send Marion to a conference rival they could wind up trading themselves right out of the playoffs. The Bulls are still probably one piece away from being a serious postseason threat, and Marion would absolutely make them a force to be reckoned with. But Hinrich is also the most likely to be available because Derrick Rose is assumed to be the new starter in Chi-Town. One way or the other, we haven't heard the last of the Heat in this summer's trade rumors. They need another deal to get their rotation in order, and there's no reason Beasley can't step in at the three if Marion steps out.
How about Nocioni + Hinrich for Odom + Filler? LA does it to get a PG and SF and their starting 5 looks pretty damn good with Hinrich, Bryant, Nocioni, Gasol, Bynum We do it to unload contracts...and it also gives us a pretty decent scoring option upfront too... Rose, Gordon, Deng, Odom, Gooden(?)

This is one of those ideas that makes a lot of sense but I think there are twol reasons to be concerned. 1. Marion's contract status. I think longer-term stability is underrated and Marion will have an expiring contract. That will generate a lot of uncertainty both for him and the team. On the one hand, I don't like him so much as a player that I want to extend his contract at something like its current value. Miami doesn't either. But he's too good a player to let him walk. With the young state of our team, what I'd want to see is a one year contract extension. That'd set us up for cap room in 2010 and Marion as either a fallback plan if we don't get anyone or a sign and trade chip. What I wouldn't want to see is taking him with an expiring deal now and then letting him walk or giving him a long-term extension that cost us a shot at Wade. 2. Marion's attitude. This is a guy who more or less pouted his way off a title contending team. That gives me some pause. Will he be able to work and play well with others? If those things are worked out, then great. Hinrich + Gooden or Noc (have to make room for Marion and the Heat would need one of them too) and we're in shape. Preferably Noc, because finding a taker for him seems like a tough sell to me.
1) I wouldn't do a deal if we didn't talk to Marion first and arrange for a contract extension. 2) With Phoenix's cap situation (over the LT) and the way they shopped him, I'm not surprised his attitude wasn't perfect. Look at the Bulls' drop last season over similar issues (contract). I'd be OK with giving 'em Kirk and Thomas. Thomas would be the perfect complement to Beasley. If you know what I mean.
I think my ideal going forward would be: 1- Derrick Rose 28, Ben Gordon 20 2- Ben Gordon 12, Larry Hughes 30, Thabo 6 3- Deng 36, Thabo 12 4- Marion 36, Thomas 12 5- Noah 28, Thomas 20 Keeping Gooden and trading Thomas would work too, although we again run into the extension issue with Gooden. He'll need an extension and we either risk the 2010 bonanza or lose him. Meh. Notice how I disappeared Nocioni completely?

Derrick Rose 36, Gordon 12 2. Hughes 24, Gordon 24 3. Deng 36, Thabo 12 4. Marion 36, Noah 12 5. Gooden 36, Noah 12 Something like that.

does miami really want a PG that bad??? Seriously I think the Heat are ready to win "now" with Wade, Beasely, and Marion next season. Let Marion play for one year, take a stab at a title...after his contract is up go out and sign some more talent with all the money that you'll have.

He's an expiring contract, essentially. Dumps us of Nocionis and Hinrich's contract.
