<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>BEIJING (Reuters) - Beijing has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics. Dog is eaten not only by the large Korean community in China's capital but is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants. A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labeled. Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries." The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu. Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.</div> Link
Oh, the politics of the Olympics.... Not sure China's biggest worry is offending ANIMAL rights activists....
Total bullshit pandering to those wacks....If eating dogs is part of your culture, stand up and be proud of it....

They're pandering to tourists and the media who'd find it disgusting, just as much as they are to animal rights activists. This is just one part of China's huge effort to make themselves more "western."

Meanwhile, they continue to get blasted for human rights/lack of gov't transparency...... But hey, they removed dog from the menu.

Damn, I was looking forward to going to a Chinese Taco Bell and ordering a chihuahua wrap supreme! lol, well if I had the opportunity I probably wouldn't eat dog. However it'd be totally different if I was starving. I would have no problem eating Donkey though.
I don't eat dogs personally since they don't serve them here in the US, but I don't see all the issues that people have with that. People here in the US eat beef, pork, chicken, and they're all animal just like the dog is. I don't see a difference. And I agree Beef, they should have been proud of their culture and keep it on the menu.

They arent really concerned with animals rights, they are concerned with peoples perceptions....if doesnt say they would stop eating dog, it says they wont be serving dog during the olympics....when the world press is around, its back to literal hush puppies and chili dogs....my advice to them: decide who you are and be that , and those that dont like it dont have to attend....
the difference is a cow looks tasty. a pig looks tasty. a chicken looks gross but you know it'd be good fried. i have yet to find a dog that looks tasty, if i did, i would gladly eat it.

Its a french bulldog, huge ribs and her legs look like gigantic chicken wings. Roast that sh*t and it would probably look really, really good.
China is hypersensitive when it comes to their perception. They take even the smallest slights as grave insults. Which is ironic, considering they want to be known as a dominant player in Int'l Relations.... because as we all know, a dominant state in Int'l Relations NEVER gets criticized.
