<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens were unable to sign franchise player Terrell Suggs to a contract extension before Tuesday's NFL deadline after a late round of negotiations the past two days.

Under league guidelines regarding franchise players, NFL teams had until 4 p.m. ET Tuesday to reach new deals or be forced to wait until after the season.

Suggs is scheduled to play under a new defensive end-linebacker designation with an $8.5 million salary after a compromise between the two sides. The Ravens have been in discussions off and on with the two-time Pro Bowl selection since April 2007.

The 2003 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year has yet to sign his franchise tender and isn't allowed to practice until he does.

General manager Ozzie Newsome has said several times he considers Suggs one of the team's core players, and the Ravens intend to sign him to a new deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in March.

The Ravens also have the option of using the franchise tag again on Suggs, which would include a 20 percent increase over this year's salary.</div>

Suggs will play out the year on the franchise tender.

He really needs to have a monster season after the pathetic one he had last yr.

Though I'm sure someone would still pay him a lot of money, if Calvin Pace can get the deal he got.

Dissonance, have you heard how far apart the two sides were on his contract?

Difference is: Pace has been a one year wonder to this point. He was bordering on "bust" before this year.

    Suggs had a poor year.

But he's been pretty productive for his career (which, obviously, you know).

My guess is Suggs wants DE money; while the Ravens want him to take LBer money (in fact, wasn't a "hybrid" position created in terms of the franchise cap designation on him?)

Probably somewhere inbetween Freeny money and Pace money. So, if I had to guess, 55-65M with about 20 or so guaranteed.

True, he has been a lot more productive than him. But what concerns me is, his production totally dropped off the yr where there's no Adalius Thomas, or Trevor Pryce (who went down with a injury).

I think it's just he wants Freeney money.

I'd think the Ravens would pay Suggs if it was in the middle of that....

I think he's got to be in the Freeney range. Wasn't the point in lettin Thomas go last year to make sure you could lock up Suggs long term?

He's had 45 sacks in his 5 seasons. That's 9/year for essentially what is a tweener. That's very good production. My guess is he'd average double digit sacks per season as a full time DE; and that's starts to pull you away from Pace money and heading into Freeney money. Hell, he nearly averages that as a rush backer.

He's gotta be asking for Freeney money.

LOL, we came to the same conclusion at the same time...

But your defense, in general, suffered injuries everywhere. Pryce, Lewis, McAllister, etc.

Just a down year for the defense in general.

Suggs has proven to be a good player. He's young, on what is becoming an older defense..... I think you gotta pay him. Pass rushers are always in need with a limited supply.

I just hope this doesn't lead to bad things in training camp. Hope a deal can be done though. I hate to see him go.
