<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Cavs.com)</div><div class='quotemain'>CLEVELAND, OH - July 16th, 2008 - Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson has signed a multi-year contract with the team, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. During the 2007-08 season, Gibson averaged career highs of 10.4 points on .432 shooting, 2.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 58 games played (26 starts). He ranked fifth in the NBA in three-point percentage (.440). During the 2008 All-Star Weekend, the 22-year old guard was named MVP of the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge after scoring 33 points on a game-record 11 three-pointers and finished second in the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout. “Daniel has been an important part of our Cavs family the last two seasons. He has worked to grow as a player and we love his passion for winning and the game itself. He’s been great off the court as well, and is exactly the kind of person we’re proud to have with us,” said Ferry. “In re-signing Daniel, it helps the Cavs both build continuity and create a young core that will be in Cleveland for many years to come.” As a rookie in 2006-07, Gibson played in 60 games (16 starts) and averaged 4.6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 16.5 minutes per game. In the 2007 playoffs, he set a franchise record for points in a quarter with 19 in the fourth quarter of the Cavaliers 98-82 win over Detroit in Game 6 that sent Cleveland to its first-ever NBA Finals appearance. He also became the first rookie since Sam Cassell in 1994 to average double figures in the Finals when he averaged 10.8 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game against the San Antonio Spurs. Since entering the NBA in 2006-07, Gibson ranks sixth overall in three-point percentage (.434) and he ranks second all-time in franchise history in three-point percentage.</div> Source As soon as I find out the salary, I'll update the thread. I would guess that it is at least the full MLE, because Boobie has the added "Bron Factor" since LeBron really likes him, so Ferry has to keep him at all costs. I do like the move, though, as I think Boobie has gobs of potential and should be crucial in any run for a Championship as a streaky scorer. The presence of LeBron creates open looks and it is up to Gibson, Szczerbiak, West, Pavlovic and the rest to make the shots. If they do (as Gibson tends to - or tended to before the injury), they can be worth at least 30ppg together, as well as big parts of crushing runs. UPDATE <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Cleveland Plain Dealer)</div><div class='quotemain'>Daniel "Boobie" Gibson admitted he lost a lot of sleep after missing the last two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics. Gibson suffered a separated shoulder in Game 5, and the Celtics went on to beat the Cavs in seven games en route to winning the NBA title. "It feels like I let my guys down," Gibson said. But in an effort to make sure he's on board for any future successes, Gibson signed a new five-year deal worth $20.8 million with the team Tuesday night. "We're excited to have Daniel back," Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said in a conference call with reporters today. "Daniel, from day one of this free-agency period, conveyed that he wanted to remain with the team and was excited about where we were going as a team and really enjoyed his two years with Cleveland thus far. "In re-signing him, it really helps us maximize the opportunity to create a core of young players and, at the same time, build on the continuity that we feel can be important for teams that are competing for championships." Ferry said he did not feel as if he was under the gun to get a deal done quickly and avoid the messy scenario that occurred last summer when negotiations between Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao dragged on through training camp and into the regular season. "There's all different types of pressure in this," Ferry said. "If it took a week, two weeks, a month, there was no exact road map on how it would all happen. But obviously we're excited it has happened and we can go ahead and focus on the rest of our off-season planning."</div> Source This is really a great deal, it shows just how selfish Pavs and AV were.
Remember in the Detroit series (?) the chicks wearing the "You can't touch our Boobie" t-shirts...? Doesn't have anything to do with the thread, other than to see if anyone else remembers it. I thought it was hilarious, even if a bit too obvious with the humor.
If they paid starting at the full MLE (5.6 mill) I'm guessing its too much, probably worth more like 3.5 mill and moving up to 4.5 mill.
Article Looks like it's a 5 year deal. I think that, based on talent, the MLE is overpaying for Boobie, but based on his worth to the team (LeBron's happiness level) he is definitely worth the MLE.
My guess is that the deal will be worth ~$30m over 5 years, with a player option for the 5th year. And on those expirings, I wouldn't be surprised to see nothing happen until nearer the deadline, since some of those expirings are not a lot better than garbage. Expirings: $13m Szczerbiak $7.3m Snow $4.8m Smith $4.5m Damon Jones I can see Szczerbiak going for a better 2, maybe along with AV If the Cavs are lucky, they might even be able to scrounge something good for Eric Snow and Damon Jones, but I wouldn't necessarily count on it.
WOW. Cavs get Boobie for $20.8m over 5 years, that's $10m less than I thought. I'm impressed with both Ferry and Boobie for this. Boobie probably could have held out for more as he knows he is paramount to LeBron's happiness, but he also wants to repay the faith the Cavs have had in him. It just goes to show how selfish AV and Pavlovic are when they got more than Boobie has. Next on the list is re-signing Delonte West.
Yea, that's not a bad contract. Pretty reasonable signing. Now the Cavs just need to wait 2 years for Ben Wallace's ugly contract to go (14 mill per year), Wally Z's 13 mill, Snow's 7 mill, Pavlovic and Damon Jone's 5 mill contracts. They got a lot of overpaid players there. Only Big Z, Lebron, and maybe Varajao have somewhat reasonable contracts.
