...NECN just reported that James Posey has signed with the Hornets.

Sorry, can't provide a link right now (I just got my internet back after 2 weeks, I hate Comcast), it's probably on the website though.

    This sucks.

    And here's the link:

I can understand why they weren't willing to give him that much money, but this is a huge blow.

I didn’t think that anybody would be willing to lock him up for that four-year deal, and that he would eventually be back in green for a three-year deal at the full MLE.

While I’ll miss Pose a great deal, I’m glad that Danny didn’t get suckered into a big deal like that. I’ll miss Pose and I’m grateful for what he did here, but you have to look at the big picture here. Again, I’m glad Danny didn’t get talked into a huge financial commitment.

It’ll be interesting to see what Danny Boy goes after as a replacement. Josh Childress or Ryan Gomes would be nice, but that’s just wishful thinking. You’d assume that Atlanta and Minnesota would match just about any offer for those guys. After that, I’d like to take a look at Bonzi Wells for a one or two-year deal. Hey, who knows - a second go-around with Ricky Davis?

Other guys I might look at are Quinton Ross and Matt Barnes.

    Just no Darius Miles, please.

Posey was valuable to the Celtics, but I keep seeing people making a huge deal out of this like it somehow makes the Celtics significantly worse. Will we find somebody as talented as Posey to fill his role? No. But we will find somebody who can fill his role pretty easily. A good team defender that can hit open shots can be had for much less $$ and much less commitment.

I wonder how much Gomes misses Boston (probably likes the green on the dollar more than Celtic Green though.. not that I would blame him at all)

We'll miss him at times and it was important to get him back, but not at any cost.

Let's see Ainge brings in to back up the SF/SG position.

Somebody who can create their own shot would be more valuable to us off the bench than Posey was. Posey was a good defender, and we're not likely going to replace him with a player as good on D. But the way the team defense is setup, you don't need great one-on-one defenders on the perimeter. Someone that can play adequate defense but can contribute more offensively than taking open threes would be ideal.

I tihnk this is a pretty big blow to the Celts. You can get a guy in the mold of Posey to fill that role but Posey had a pretty big impact with all the intangibles he has. Potential replacements in free agency that come to mind; Mo Evans, Quinton Ross, maybe Kelenna Azubuike, Matt Barnes isn't a great defender but if you want to replace the toughness and cheap shots hes your man. Dunno how Tony Allen is percieved these days but he can be a good defender when he wants to be right?

There's nothing the Celts can offer Gomes/Childress that their teams wouldn't match.

How about Grant Hill for a dark horse? Hes a FA, wants to win a championship, the Suns situation isn't too great as far as winning a championship, especially out west.

6 mill a year for a guy like Posey isn't all that bad imo.........better than splitting it between 2 players who won't be as effective...........

With Luxury tax it becomes 4 years 50 mill lol.

The Celts are already at the Luxury tax, which is at 71 mill.

Well the Lakers didn't get him, but this is still a great day seeing as LA might have to go through Boston again.

Thats how I see it bro. [IMG]

I don't think the Hornets will win the West with the Lakers having Kobe, Odom (or Artest), Pau, and Bynum.

Yeah the Celtics are still the team to beat in the East, imo.

I'm one of those people who thinks this is a big blow for the Celtics.

I don't believe we'll find a guy as good as Posey to fill the perimeter and 3-point role that he'll leave vacant.

The most important thing about Posey on offense was that he would spread the floor for the Big 3, while on defense was his defense.

I'm not saying he's the best player on either of the two ends, but he's probably one of the best that can do them both.

Was the contract too much? Yea, yes it was, but I would have done the best to match that offer. If we got 2 good years out of him, a bad 3rd year, we'd at least have a 6 million dollar contract to use as an expiring and trade.

Watch him in NO though, and you'll see that he's not THAT valuable. For our team is was mostly team defense and having KG around.

I really believe aquaitious that even without Posey, next season we'll be the top defensive team in the league and thats all because the team has bought into that and of course having KG around doesn't hurt.

So we win the NBA title in 7 games instead of 6.. it's not that big of a deal [IMG] (wishful thinking I know)

That's also hoping that Thibodeau is still returning. I'm not sure of the status of that, but I'm with aquaitious in believing that this is a huge blow. Defense wins championships and Posey was the second best defensive player on the team. For a longshot I say why not try going for Artest. His career numbers are little better in almost every category, and with KG around he probably wouldn't be too much of a problem. That's wishful thinking though as someone else mentioned that we have no pieces to make a trade.

C's don't have the salaries available to make the trade.
that and they're short players for a full roster right now too.
