Teacher accused of sex with student

KATY, TX (KTRK) -- A Katy ISD high school teacher is accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student.

Virginia Cammack, 35, is charged with having an improper relationship with a student. Cammack was a math teacher at Katy's Morton Ranch High School. School officials learned about the alleged relationship through an anonymous tip to the principal.

Assistant District Attorney Denise Oncken said, "The anonymous tip actually involved a parent, who had other children, who was aware of inappropriate sightings that she had had with this student"

Cammack has since resigned from the school. Prosecutors don't think Cammack had sexual relations with any other students.

Woodbridge gym teacher, 37, gets 3 years for sex with teen

A 37-year-old Woodbridge middle school gym teacher was sentenced to three years in prison today following his May guilty plea to official misconduct for having sex with a teenage girl.

But Craig Yarnall, a former teacher at Colonia Middle School and a former junior varsity girl's soccer coach at Colonia High School, may serve as little as 60 days in prison if he is accepted into a intensive parole supervision program, his attorney said.

Selwyn teacher grew bolder with time: detective
    PAUL CHERRY, The Gazette
    Published: 9 hours ago

Details of how Selwyn House teacher Richard Doucet allegedly tried to lure a 13-year-old boy to a hotel in Virginia surfaced in court this week.

The 36-year-old faces several charges in two different judicial districts in Virginia, and Doucet had court dates in both cases this week. He was arrested May 8 in Fredricksburg, Va., during an investigation in which Detective John Chapman, an investigator with the Dumfries, Va., police department, posed as a 13-year-old boy over the Internet.

Doucet had been an elementary teacher at the private boys' school in Westmount since 1999. At the time of his arrest, he was homeroom teacher to Grades 3 and 5 at Selwyn House.

    Associated Press
    11:32 PM CDT, July 16, 2008

ELLSWORTH, Wis. - A former substitute teacher at Prescott Middle School faces nine months in jail for her sexual relationship with a 13-year-old student.

The criminal complaint says the boy went to the home of 39-year-old Anne Knopf once a week for more than a month for the encounters in early 2007.

Knopf pleaded guilty yesterday to repeated second-degree sexual assault of the same child. She was sentenced to nine months in jail, followed by five years probation.

She also is prohibited from having any contact with the victim and she must register as a sex offender.

Teacher Caught in Act with Student Will Not Have to Register as Sex Offender

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Katherine Harder, 31, appeared for arraignment and sentencing in the Pottawatomie County District Court Thursday.

Harder was found by police in a parked car with a 17-year-old student near Tuttle Creek Dam March 26, 2008.

Harder pled no contest to an amended count of Aggravated Endangering of a Child. The amended count is a level 9 person felony.

Harder was found guilty and sentenced to 6 months with the Dept. of Corrections. She was granted immediate probation for a period of 12 months.

The amended charge was more severe then the charge of Unlawful Sexual Relations, but does not require registration pursuant to the Offender Registration Act, however, the charge cannot be expunged.

The Pottawatomie County Attorney's office says this resolution was reached after extensive discussions involving the victim and his family, the state and the defendant and her attorney.

Former Teacher Found With Over 60,000 Child Porn Images
Former School Teacher Charged with Sexual Assault, Posession of Child Porn And Drug

    July 18, 2008—

A former Bridgeport elementary school teacher has been charged with possessing thousands of child pornography pictures and videos, two months after police accused him of sexually assaulting a girl under 16.

Police officers arrested Thomas Bavedas, 38, at his home in Milford Thursday afternoon. He was held on $500,000 bond and was to appear in Milford Superior Court on Friday.

Authorities said Bavedas had more than 60,000 photographs and more than 3,000 video images of child pornography on his home computer, including some photos he allegedly took himself.

Bavedas intended to plead not guilty to the charges Friday, said his lawyer, Edmund Q. Collier. Collier said he also expected Bridgeport police to file additional child pornography charges.

Bavedas allegedly recorded himself committing a sex act in the presence of a minor and took some photos of naked children, said Officer Vaughn Dumas, a spokesman for Milford police.

Most of the images found on Bavedas' computer were downloaded from the Internet, Dumas said.

The preteen children in the photos allegedly taken by Bavedas were all from the Milford area, and investigators believe they have identified all of them, Dumas said.

Milford police are trying to identify the children in the other pictures and in the videos. It was not clear how many children Bavedas allegedly filmed or where they were filmed, police said.

Dumas said some of the videos have been turned over to Bridgeport police, whom he said are investigating Bavedas.

Bavedas was a fourth-grade teacher at Waltersville Elementary School in Bridgeport. He was charged in May with sexually assaulting a girl under 16 whom he knew three times between 2001 and 2005.

He was also arrested the same month on cocaine and marijuana possession charges, and he resigned from his teaching job. He posted $130,000 bail for the charges brought in May.

Collier said his client would not be able to post the new $500,000 bond.

Messages seeking comment were left with Bridgeport school officials and Bridgeport police.

Milford police seized Bavedas' home computer when they arrested him on the sexual assault charges in May and later discovered the child pornography, authorities said.

Bavedas' arrest on Thursday was first reported by the New Haven Register and Connecticut Post. He is charged in the new case with first-degree possession of child pornography, importing child pornography, two counts of employing a minor in an obscene performance, four counts of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of voyeurism.

"We all knew that the charges were coming since the date of his first arrest," Collier said. "They're extremely serious charges. I think Mr. Bavedas has taken steps to deal with whatever issues he may have."

    Ex-teacher sentenced in sex case

    By Bill Bishop

    The Register-Guard

    Published: July 17, 2008 12:00AM

A former Eugene substitute teacher, Sarah Jayne Bridges, 24, was sentenced Wednesday to five years of probation and 60 days in jail for sexual contact with a middle school-age boy in two off-campus encounters earlier this year.

Bridges admitted having sexual intercourse and other sexual contact on two occasions with the 15-year-old victim in March. She pleaded guilty to one count each of third-degree rape and third-degree sodomy.

As part of her sentence, Bridges must undergo sex offender treatment, register as a sex offender and refrain from contact with minors without approval of her probation officer, according to court records.

In a statement in court, Bridges expressed remorse for violating the trust placed in her by the victim?€™s parents. It is The Register-Guard?€™s policy not to identify juvenile victims of sex crimes.

Bridges also was ordered to pay $1,000 in assessments. The conviction carries an automatic revocation of her teaching license.

Bridges met the victim in her role as a substitute teacher in Eugene, where she worked about 153 days from September 2006 until her arrest.Bridges was arrested June 6 and posted $5,000 to secure her release from jail one day later.

Because of jail overcrowding, she most likely will serve no more than 10 days of the 60-day sentence, Chief Deputy Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner said.

Secret cell phone discovery ended teacher's sex abuse of girl

By Tyra Braden | Of The Morning Call

It started innocently enough with a few rides home and an occasional text message. The 12-year-old girl couldn't have known that the young teacher was befriending her to satisfy perverse sexual desires.

But a Northampton County prosecutor said the relationship escalated into a nightmare, with 28-year-old Keri Ann Brekne blindfolding the New Jersey girl with a belt, tying her to a bed and sexually assaulting her.

''She did whatever she wanted to do then,'' Assistant District Attorney

Patricia C. Broscius said. ''When she was done, she would ask [the girl] if she was OK.''

The assaults occurred over six months while Brekne was teaching seventh-grade social studies at Lopatcong Township Middle School in Warren County, N.J., and living in Bethlehem. She was arrested in January.

On Wednesday, she pleaded guilty to five felony counts of aggravated indecent assault. She faces 50 years in prison and will have to register as a sex offender under Pennsylvania's version of Megan's Law for the rest of her life.

Despite her guilty plea, Brekne's lawyer disputed Broscius' description of her as a conniving, controlling, dangerous predator who ''groomed'' the girl, enticing her to sneak away from her parents for sexual trysts at Brekne's home and giving her a ''secret'' cell phone so the two could keep in touch.

‘Predator’ label stays in teacher sex cases
    ADAM LYNN; adam.lynn@thenewstribune.com
    Published: July 9th, 2008 01:00 AM
A Pierce County judge refused Tuesday to declare unconstitutional a law that classifies as “predatory” certain sex crimes committed by teachers.

Superior Court Judge D. Gary Steiner ruled that public defender Melanie MacDonald hadn’t proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the law violates the rights of Jennifer L. Rice, a former Tacoma elementary school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with two boys.

One boy was 10 and Rice’s student when she began having sex with him last year, according to charging documents.

Rice stood to shave 61/2 years off her potential sentence had she prevailed Tuesday. But Steiner said he was “generally in agreement” with deputy prosecutor Grant Blinn’s position after an hourlong hearing.

“It is a difficult decision and a very important decision,” the judge said in denying MacDonald’s motion to dismiss the predatory designation against Rice.

MacDonald had argued that the law, which the Legislature passed overwhelmingly in 2006, was unconstitutional because it wrongly curtails the powers of prosecutors. It states that prosecutors “shall” add the predatory designation against teachers charged with first- or second-degree child rape or first-degree child molestation where the victim is a minor student.

Under the separation of powers doctrine, it’s up to prosecutors, not lawmakers, to determine what crimes to charge, MacDonald argued.

The prosecutor has the role of determining who should be charged, what they should be charged with and who should be given the benefit of a plea bargain either because of mitigation or because of the facts of their case, she said.

Prescott, Wis. / Teacher guilty of sex with boy, 13
Woman ordered to stay away from daughter's ex
    By Jessica Huang
    jhuang@pioneerpress.com
Article Last Updated: 07/17/2008 12:08:38 AM CDT

A former Prescott, Wis., substitute teacher pleaded guilty Wednesday of having a sexual affair with her daughter's 13-year-old ex-boyfriend.

Anne Knopf, 39, was convicted of second-degree sexual assault and was ordered to stay away from the victim and other boys younger than 18 for five years. She was also sentenced to nine months in jail and required to register as a sex offender.

But before Pierce County Circuit Judge Robert Wing made his ruling, the boy's mother stood and read a statement through tears.

"I have lost trust in not only my son, but in everyone," she read. "Think of my son. How can he possibly have trust in any adult?"

Afterward, she warned parents to know who's talking to their children, especially online.

The Pioneer Press doesn't usually identify the victims of sexual assaults and isn't naming the boy or his family.

It was a string of e-mail and instant messages that tipped the boy's family to the affair. The boy's father had installed a monitoring program on the boy's computer and found a long exchange between his son and "Island Girl."

He gave the conversation to police about 4 a.m. May 17.

About three hours earlier, the father had gotten a telephone call from his ex-wife saying their son and her car were missing, according to court records. The father found the vehicle parked near Knopf's house.

Lathrop Teacher Faces Child Sex Allegations

SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CA - A Lathrop teacher has been arrested on charges of lewd and lascivious acts with children under 14 years of age.

Michael Berchtold, 32, of French Camp surrendered to detectives Wednesday afternoon. The arrest warrant alleges two counts of lewd or lascivisious acts on a minor and three counts of annoying or molesting a child.

Berchtold taught third grade at Joseph Widmer, Jr. Elementary School in Lathrop. Investigators said there were three female victims, ages 8 and 9, who were enrolled at the school at the time of the incidents.

Manteca school district administrators say Berchtold has not been placed on leave since school is out for summer. If the investigation is not concluded by the start of school he will be placed on leave.

Administrators assume the acts took place on school campus but are not certain if it was during school hours. The accusations were brought on the last day of school by a student in Berchtold's class.

Detectives said Berchtold has also been involved in Lathrop area youth programs, including youth sports and church activities.

The investigation is continuing, detectives say.
