Either in the off-season, or before the deadline mid-season? Who would we get in return?

Yeah, I was going to say. Was there ever talk of him going there?

I know there was some stuff about Barbosa/Diaw maybe coming to the Nets, but I don't remember seeing "for Vince Carter" in those talks

No rumors, but Shaq is one of the few vocal VC fans among players in the league so there might be something. Two problems with Barbosa/Diaw: their contracts run as long as VCs so they don't help clear space, and with our overfull roster we're in 2-for-1 mode, not 1-for-2 mode. But I wouldn't rule it out.

Ha, well you actually just made a great case for why you can rule that out.

    no way we trade VC...

    http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9526

There has been some scuttlebutt surrounding Vince Carter and whether the Nets are looking to move him after already purging Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd. The speculation stems from the Nets' rumored desire to lure LeBron James to Brooklyn in 2010, the assumption being that Carter's $50-million over the next three years must be moved to create the most possible space for James.

But here in Las Vegas, a reliable league source explained that this has no legs to it. "It's all talk," the source said. "There's nothing to it."

Although moving Carter does make sense if the Nets were undergoing a firesale, that isn't the case, the source said. The team has definitely put itself in a position to make a splash in the summer of 2010, with the salaries of Bobby Simmons, Trenton Hassell, and Keith Van Horn coming off the books that year.

Marcus Williams, Josh Boone, and Maurice Ager may also be off the books should the Nets opt to not give qualifying offers or extensions to any of them.

In other words, the cap space is basically already there. The Nets will be looking at potentially only having Carter, Devin Harris, Yi Jianlian, and Sean Williams under contract, meaning there's plenty of space available to make their run at LeBron – or whoever else they have on their radar.

Actually, in addition to those players we'll also have Lopez, Anderson, CDR, and presumably next year's first-rounder on the books. So that's eight guys for a total of $38-$40M. The cap is projected to be around $62M in 2010 and a max contract will start at $19M. So, yes the cap space is basically there, but it's pretty close, which means we can't afford significant help in the meantime. And I'm far from convinced that eight-man core will good enough to lure LBJ. So I think something still should be done, and VC is the only piece that it helps to move.

Trading Vince for good, young talent (that will lure LeBron), high draft picks (that will lure LeBron), and maybe even a little cap space would be great. Maybe the crack-smokers dream of signing Amare one year and LBJ the next year comes true.

but what does PHO have to offer us? no draft picks in the lottery, no young talent... and barbosa and diaw dont follow the 2010 rule... so i say NO

and vc has been great for the nets! so he should be our star!

I really don't see Phoenix winning it all with their current lineup. If they could somehow take a huge risk and trade some young players for Vince Carter, then they might have a shot at the Finals. But not every big trade can transform a team into the "Celts". But then again, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!!

VC and Sean for Barbosa and Diaw works.
It's a revenue-neutral trade this year but saves about $3M against the cap in 2010 (because Diaw has no increases). Phoenix could throw in a draft pick I guess. This trade only recently became possible because both Barbosa and Diaw were base-year compensation guys. This is why I said I wouldn't rule it out earlier. This might make sense for both teams.

PHX is in no position financially to take on VC's contract and they wouldnt have any assets to give us back in return

I wasn't advocating a trade to the Suns. I was simply telling yinets why a trade (not to any specific team) could be good.

I'd love to see this happen. I know Vince and Shaq are good friends and it's only fair to Vince.

If this were to happen I would presume it would be a deadline deal in February which I would be all for in order to clear more caproom (especially if we somehow-yes I know, pipe dream- manage to swing a sign and trade for Josh Smith). I don't want to trade him to Cleveland because helping them out by giving LBJ a legitimate side kick is the last thing we ought to be doing if we anticipate making a push to sign him as we all believe and hope we will. I would love to see VC in Phoenix teamed with Amare, Nash and Shaq, that team would be incredible and would be right at the front of the line vying for a ring. I am not Vince hater/basher, Im very happy with how he's performed as a Net, however I would simply prefer a younger star caliber player on our roster to attempt to lure Lebron here..Again, Josh Smith would be that player for me in a perfect (NBA 2k9) world.

Look at this Phoenix staring five though:

    Nash
    Carter
    Hill
    Stoudamire
    Shaq

    Uh...WOW
