Jay Richardson showed me stuff last season. In one game, the opposing offense was pinned back in their territory. I watch Jay bull rush a LT all the way back into the QB, causing a bad throw which led to an easy INT. Chris Clemons (now in Philly) got most of the work though at RE. We grabbed some free agents in the offseason, but I think Jay can take this position with his relentless work during camp.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Jay Richardson spent his offseason watching the Raiders collect defensive ends like he was the one going out of style. They signed two veterans, brought in three rookies and converted a tight end to his position.

So how did Richardson respond to all the unexpected company?

"Let the best man win, simple as that," Richardson said at training camp in Napa. "Their job is to bring in guys to make this a competitive environment and I can appreciate that. You're always best when you're competing."</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>In the first five days of camp, Richardson has chased down speedy running back Darren McFadden from behind on a daily basis. No surprise for one of the few defensive linemen who played the run well last season.

So what is new? The way he has been whipping around the left tackle to the quarterback, or spinning up the middle to wreck the pocket.

Richardson is developing the type of pass rush needed to be a full-time player. That's preferable to the first- and second-down guy who got yanked on passing downs as a rookie in 2007.</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>"Last year at this time, (Richardson) was just trying to get lined up," coach Lane Kiffin said. "Now he's recognizing things and seeing different things around him. We've added some competition, so it's just going to make him better."</div>

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Defensive end Derrick Burgess continues to be perhaps the most impressive player in camp, and not just as a pass rusher. He blew up a running play, getting Darren McFadden in the backfield.</div>

I am looking at a great couple of DE's this year. Burgess on one end, Richardson on the other.

I liked what he showed last year, he better be good if he was worth cutting out 3rd round pick for. He seems to be proving that he was worth it so far.
