Saddam may not have been very religious, but he was persecuting shiite Muslims for their beliefs.

Maybe it's because Saudi Arabia is far more fundamentalist and yet we are their best friends. We don't actually care about their human rights violations, because if we did, we would be applying the same logic toward them. No one is outraged when the Saudis do public beheadings every Friday or amputate some poor kid who stole an apple from a fruit stand. They also don't allow homosexuals. Yet, everyone is led to believe that we should focus this kind of anger on Saddam, Iraq, and any other Arab nation that isn't aligned with us diplomatically. Hypocrisy.

If I were living in any of those countries, I would just move away, as far as I could.

Because stopping this type of ridiculous fundamentalism has never been on the agenda until it directly impacts us (or you, I'm Canadian). Saddam's human rights violations always were given secondary importance to the threat of his weapons programs because foreign policy is almost never dictated by pure altrustic human concern. Stopping his persecution of Shiites, Kurds, etc. came from American intervention but you're kidding yourself if you think it was what motivated military action in the first place. You only have to look to the fact that addressing this disgusting mentality is not even mentioned as a priority when the topic of rebuilding Iraq is brought up. The troops will leave that country at some point and I'm betting that these acts will continue to go on. Just like they do in Saudi Arabia. Just like they do in America's ally, Pakistan.

He persecuted them because they created political dissension more than because of their specific beliefs. If Iraq was a Shiite dominated country, he probably would've been doing the same to Sunnis. I'm not trying to defend him or anything, but he was pretty clearly a secular dictator.

Lava, Have you watched that first South Park movie? Saddam is not only in Hell (having recently been killed by wild boars) but also having a homosexual relationship with Satan. However, Satan, portrayed as rather sensitive and caring, is hurt by Saddam's constant negativity. Saddam attempts to regain Satan's trust with a song: "I Can Change". Upon learning that Saddam had only feigned interest in him in the hope of obtaining his help in returning to Earth, Satan promptly breaks up with him.

Well, Saddam is quite fortunate those Boars got to him before we did. I don't think he'd want to hang around and wait to be punished.
