Well I just finished watching the Chinese national team got an absolute lesson in how to play hard and compete. The Aussies competed on every possesion and made the Chinese national team look like a junior high team. Outside of Yao, China had few players who competed. The biggest culprit being Yi. This guy has no heart. He hardly did anything all game. Scored 0 points and hardly took a shot. Outside of a few rebound, he practically did nothing. At this rate he'll be lucky to crack the Nets rotation next season. I just don't really know what's wrong with the guy but he is just not even competing out on the court. Perhaps it's stage freight of the Olympic games being so close? I don't know. Right now CNT are on target to loose by 100+ points to team USA on opening night.

Yi's performance is disturbing and will need to be looked into by the Nets organization. But in Yi's defense as pointed out by someone on the Yao forum, the CNT only had 10 hours rest from the previous game yesterday. Not much else positive here.

    What defense? [IMG]

Seriously, though, if Yi still has conditioning issues (which is entirely strange, since he's barely played in the offseason), then we have some real problems here.

I really doubt it's that, though, and am chalking it up to either lack of interest (still bad), the Chinese coach saving him for the actual Olympics (doesn't make much sense, though), the offense being run mainly through Yao (and whoever that 2nd option is, Wang?), Yi simply sucking (entirely possible), or the Chinese guards still being at fault...although, I can't see how that's really all that possible.

How the hell did this happen? Is Yi saving it up for the Olympics?

The most disappointing thing for me was just his lack of will to compete. Ok you can have bad days. A bad day is when you can't hit jack and go say 2-11 or 3-13 or something to that effect. That's still putting in an effort but just having an off game. Yi didn't even do that against the Aussies. He took 3 f***king shots in 24 minutes of action. Grab just 4 rebounds. While his man to man defense was solid that was about where the effort ended. I just don't know why he is defering so much. It's not just to Yao but to EVERY single scrub on CNT. His replacement, who is a total scrub took 4 shots in 8 minutes. That's says it all. There was just so much emphasis being put on the Olympics I just wonder if it has all gotten to him and he is now playing scare. I mean this should really be his time to shine. He had just came off a decent rookie season in the NBA. Has the chance to play for a young team in a big market next season. The Olympics is the stage for him to show everyone what he can do. Yet he has become a skrinking star. It's just baffling stuff really. Maybe he has decided he can't give a f**k about playing for the national team anymore after they told him off for spending time with that girl in a karaoke bar till 4 am. His play certainly hasn't been the same since that bit of news broke. Whatever the f**k the guy need to grow some balls and start playing and competing again.

That's gotta be worrisome. I remember the first signs that Andrea Bargnani was going to have a disappointing sophomore season was that he didn't perform up to expectations with his national team. Like Tang Man said, you can excuse a bad shooting night but not a total lack of effort.

I don't know what's lamer: the Chinese government acting like overprotective parents or Yi going to a karaoke bar.

I finished watching the game. We're both big Yi fans, the guy is hard to read. Looks like he's going through the motions. Hopefully there will be something from the Chinese press to answer what his problem is.

Yi didn't do much the entire game, he had 1 block. The Aussies played physical and the CNT tried to match the intensity but was not prepared to play this style. The CNT starting pg collided on a screen and couldn't continue for the day. They couldn't even run their half court offense after the first quarter.

i thought yi's here just to put people in seats and give half the nets' roster shoe deals and all-star selections? if yi can give us 10 and 7 while shooting 85% from the free throw line which are only very slight improvements from his rookie year i will be very happy. yi is a nice bonus we got in what amounts to be a salary dump. it's not like we wasted a #1 pick for him...

If Yi can shoot consistently, he will contribute more than that . . . In the past the defensive strategy against the Nets has been to double Vince and pack the paint with bigs. Devin is a better shooter than Kidd, so he requires some attention. . . because the free agent signings can (mostly) all shoot, when CDR, Ryan, and Yi are on the court, someone will be open.*

*let's hope that it isn't Hassell or Swift.

I didn't watch the game or anything but by looking at the boxscore it didnt seem like China really had any ball movement to get anyone in the game good shot opportunities. I mean 4 assists for the entire team with the most any one player having been 1. Maybe Yi didn't play like he cared but the whole team sucked. I wont pass judgement on what Yi can do until I see him in a Net uniform with people who can distribute the ball and draw defensive attention away from Yi.

Yi continuing to puzzle us here..He started off last season playing well with Milwaukee and then went on a bit of a slump for the rest of the season as his scoring output dropped each month. Looks like he still hasn't snapped out of it, hopefully he gets some confidence and starts playing some more inspired basketball.

umm i didnt watch the game... so i can pass judgement like you guys like he didnt have effort or cared... but he shot 0-3.... and i think when ur a part of the CNT... first option is always to pass to Yao first... i think thats their play... give yao the ball...

and with the nets Yi will consistently get open looks when they double carter or his man leaves him to go help with devin's penetration

They're essentially a warmup for the Olympics. Of course they don't matter, but coming up scoreless after struggling the previous game is something that raises eyebrows for those of us who hope he can develop into a solid player for us.

True, but one would think that Yao would draw some serious attention in the paint as well. I would think most teams would send at least two guys at him, and although I do agree he will get more looks with the Nets, I still believe he should be imposing his will on inferior competition in these games. They hype around this guy and the player which many hope he will develop into is not as a standstill jumpshooter who relies on others to create shots for him. A lot of people have said he has the potential to be a Dirk-like player, and if that is the type of mold which he will fill, he needs to be more of a force and the common analysis of lackluster, uninspired play is not encouraging news for us.
