Injured QB arrives in Terre Haute; return to field still unknown

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Peyton Manning has taken his next step on his road to recovery. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback is in town.

Exactly where still is in question, as is when the NFL's two-time MVP will gain medical clearance to join training camp workouts at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

"He's here," coach Tony Dungy said after Tuesday morning's practice. "He's immobilized. We don't want a lot of people trying to see him. That's why we're kind of not saying exactly where he is. But he's here in town."

Manning had been at his Indianapolis home recovering from July 14 surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee. The team said his recovery time would range from four to six weeks.

There's no timetable for his return, but the team won't hurry the process.

"Our big thing is we're not going to rush him out here to try to get him back for Week 3 or Week 4 of the preseason," Dungy said. "When he's ready to go, he'll be out and hopefully does get some preseason time in."

The recovery of Tom Santi might give the team an idea of when Manning might return. The rookie tight end underwent a similar knee procedure two weeks before Manning. Santi has been watching practice with his left knee wrapped.

Manning and the other five players on the physically unable to perform list -- defensive end Dwight Freeney, safety Bob Sanders, guard Ryan Lilja, linebacker Tyjuan Hagler and Santi -- are not expected to make the trip to Canton, Ohio, this weekend. The Colts open their preseason schedule Sunday against the Washington Redskins in the Hall of Fame Game.
    Work for Harrison

Quarterback Jim Sorgi is expected to see extended work against the Redskins. Marvin Harrison also will play some with the No. 1 offense. The eight-time Pro Bowl receiver has practiced without incident as he attempts to come back from an injury-plagued 2007.

"Marvin is full-go," Dungy said, "as is everybody that's practicing."

Even some players who haven't been cleared to practice are eager to play against the Redskins.

"(Freeney) is lobbying to be put on that full-go unit," Dungy said. "I watched him run the bags (Tuesday) and he did very well. Bob Sanders did well. It's just a matter of time for those guys.''

How long the front-line players stay on the field against Washington likely hinges on how effective they are.

"That's kind of the incentive,'' Dungy said. "The better you play, the faster you come out.''
    Cool-down coming?

Players have been dealing with heat and humidity on a daily basis, but that might change today. The projected high is 81 degrees.

There was little relief Tuesday. The temperature was 83 at 1:35 p.m. with a heat index of 94. As the players walked off the field in the afternoon following a special teams-only session, it was 88 with a heat index of 91.

Today's schedule calls for an 8:30 a.m. practice followed by a 7:30 p.m. session in Cook Stadium. The latter will be one of only two night practices.
    Bullitt back

Melvin Bullitt was back at camp Tuesday. The second-year safety sprained his right thumb Saturday morning. He had his right arm in a sling to immobilize the arm.

The team believes Bullitt has a chance to return to practice next week.</div>

Not surprising. Manning probably needs, what, one week to reestablish timing with his WRs? LOL...

    They'll be fine. As always.

Haha so true. Anthony Gonzalez developed a nice rapport last year, in spite of his own injury problems.

What do you expect out of Gonzalez this year, huevon? Outside of fantasy football reasons, I am curious.

I wouldn't be surprised if he hauls in close to 1000 yards, honestly.

Peyton may opt to go to someone like Clark more though, bec. of his experience. And if the Colts begin to run the ball more with Addai, it could take away opportunities. But I think 800+yards is what Gonzalez will finish with, assuming he's healthy/Peyton's healthy.

Damn, Vintage totally beat me to my own prediction.

Gonzalez manned the hell up last year, and in his last 6 games he averaged 75 yards per game. If Harrison wasn't coming back I would definitely bet on 1000 yards, that isn't the case though. Manning does use Clark as a safety blanket but Gonzo was still seeing the ball plenty of times.

Harrison is *just* starting running drills after his messy/leaking bursa sac surgery sidelined him for a season. So if Gonzo doesn't get 800 yards I'd be shocked.
