http://sportstwo.com/MLB/Story/MLB/2750749 Announcer Skip Caray dies at 68 Sunday, August 3, 2008 10:03 PM ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Longtime Atlanta Braves broadcaster Skip Caray passed away on Sunday. He was 68. Caray, the son of legendary broadcaster Harry Caray, died in his sleep at his Atlanta home. "Our baseball community has lost a legend today," Braves president John Schuerholz said. "The Braves family and Braves fans everywhere will sadly miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife, Paula, and his children." This season marked the 33rd year Caray had been calling games for Atlanta, a majority of which were for TBS, which gave him a national audience and fan base. Caray, who was just nine days shy of his 69th birthday, was inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in 2005 with his longtime broadcast partner Pete Van Wieren. Born in St. Louis, Carey began his broadcasting career at KMOX-Radio in his hometown as host of a 15-minute high school sports show and as a sportscaster for high school basketball games. He later joined his father as a color commentator for Missouri football. Caray began broadcasting baseball for the Tulsa Oilers of the Southern League in 1963. He also has announced for the Atlanta Crackers in baseball's Southern League and basketball for St. Louis University. He joined the NBA's St. Louis Hawks broadcasting team in 1967, moving to Atlanta with the team the following year.
I fell asleep listening to Skip Carey many times when I was a young boy....then later, when I started my broadcasting career, I board-oped a ton of Braves baseball, and few know this, but the TBS crew was actually 2 crews, and they would do half the game on TV and then half on the radio....I may have heard more Braves baseball in the late 90s, than any other human....
It's official; this season for the Braves truly sucks now. I just saw this on ESPNews & am crushed. I have had cable for what seems like eons & instantly took a liking to Skip; The distinct voice, the dry wit, the calling like it is. No matter how bad things seemed for some reason listening to Skip ALWAYS put a smile on my face. I recalling coming home from a night class when I was in college & listening to the NLCS game on the way home. It would not be the same until I heard Skip announcing Sid Bream sliding across the plate to send the Braves to their 1st WS. RIP Skip Caray
