Red Sox place waiver claim on Brian Giles <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>The Boston Red Sox have placed a waiver claim on San Diego right fielder Brian Giles, and are negotiating to acquire the 14-year veteran from the Padres. Giles, 37, is hitting .296 with a .391 on-base percentage, 61 walks and 44 strikeouts this season. Boston's interest in Giles might be spurred by concern about the health of third baseman Mike Lowell, who is battling a sore hip, and designated hitter David Ortiz, who has spent time on the disabled list resting a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist. Giles is earning $9 million this year, and his contract with the Padres has a club option for $9 million for 2009 that would climb to $11 million in the event he is traded. Giles has a limited no-trade clause, and Boston is among the teams to which he cannot be traded without his permission. Joe Bick, his agent, declined to discuss the situation.</div>
This makes no sense. Why do we need another outfielder? Unless the Sox are worried that Ortiz still isn't up to par...
so much for that... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/base...ston/index.html <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Padres outfielder Brian Giles has exercised his no-trade clause to veto a move to the Red Sox, the Boston Herald is reporting. The Red Sox were looking to bolster their lineup with the veteran Giles, who is batting .295 with a .390 on-base percentage for the last-place Padres. According to the Herald, Giles cited family reasons for not wanting to leave San Diego. Boston is one of eight teams Giles can veto a trade to, with Tampa Bay being one of the others.</div>

He said he wanted to retire as a padre. I dont blame him, Boston isnt gonna make the playoffs anyway.
New Yorks playoffs hopes are dwindling with all the injuries and being 8.5 GB, the Tigers have a better shot at winning the central with 7.5 GB then the yankees have of the east. Then its just the race between the #2 AL east winner and the twins or the now injury ridden white soxs.
