I did not see this coming, what does this mean for the rest of the Grizz guys, and what do you think the hawks will do?

How long is that offer? It's overpaying for 4 years and a steal if it's 5, realtive to Deng and Okafor anyway.

Wow, they sign Smith and they're looking like an upcoming young team. Smith/Gay/Mayo/Conley are a fine core. Antoine Walker would be the center? LOL. Or Darko, who's also a young player.

I think the Hawks will probably match...

No way will they lose Josh Childress AND Josh Smith in one offseason without getting anything back in return

Wow, this pretty much came out of nowhere. Why are they doing this?

Is it because they know Atlanta will match, and they want their fans to think they're at least trying?

Or are they actually trying to sign him?

Well, I guess this is the type of thing Sund was waiting for...

If the Hawks don't match that small deal, they are stupid

That is a 5 year deal starting at 10 million with 8% raises

    10000000
    10800000
    11600000
    12400000
    13200000

The Hawks better match. I don't know what Sund is waiting for. Does he want to wait for some huge offer like this to match it? If he doesn't match, I see JJ trying to get out ASAP.

Seems like a good deal for a player who has improved so much in his short time in the league.

I'm not sure how legit Hoopsworld is, but according to "sources", the Hawks will match.

I wouldn't put anything past their ownership group but I do think they will match as well. They're an up-and-coming team that finally made the playoffs and made some noise. They want to retain their fanbase from the playoffs this year and get peoples' asses in the seats. Not to mention this is a pretty damn good deal compared to what guys like Okafor, Deng, Monta Ellis, Biedrins got. Plus hes very tradeable so its not like they actually have to make the long term commitment to him.

For the Grizz, they weren't planning on spending big money this summer but this opportunity rose up once they became the only team with a lot of cap space. They signed him to a pretty good offer and might be able to land him if the Hawk's ownership backs out- this gives them a good young core from PG to PF and should get some more excitement about the team. I don't know who Smith's agent is but he may have told the Grizz that if they offered for Smith he'd help them down the line with other players (if you subscribe to questionable agent dealings like many do).

I'm guessing the Hawks match, from what cpaw laid out there, it wouldn't make much sense for them not to. But I like what Memphis is trying to do marketing their team.

Hoopsworld is about as legit as nothing. They make up new stories that are supposed to happen in a couple days that never do.

In this case though, it's hard to believe that the Hawks won't match. This contract undervalues Smith seeing the deals others are getting.

The longer he waits, the longer there's a cap hold against the Grizzlies. If they're going to match, they'd do it close to the deadline.

I can't imagine the Hawks not matching this. If they don't, than they're management needs to get canned. You don't let both Childress and Smith walk in one offseason, that's just poor front office work.
