PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Eagles could announce a contract extension for Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook as early as Friday, according to a published report.

The Philadelphia Daily News reported that the team could announce the deal prior to Friday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to the report, it is unclear how much money the 28-year-old Westbrook will receive. He had been seeking a contract similar to the eight-year, $60 million deal that LaDainian Tomlinson signed with the San Diego Chargers in 2004.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie publicly acknowledged earlier this week that Westbrook has outpeformed his five-year, $25 million contract that has three years remaining on it.

After firing former agent Fletcher Smith in July, Westbrook hinted that he would hold out of training camp if the Eagles did not restructure his deal. However, he reported and has been optimistic that new agent, Todd France, would be able to work out a deal.

A two-time Pro Bowler whose durability is constantly questioned, Westbrook has emerged as one of the NFL's top running backs in recent years. The 5-8, 200-pounder rushed for 1,333 yards and seven touchdowns while hauling in 90 receptions for 771 yards and five scores in leading the league in yards from scrimmage last season.

Westbrook has 4,785 rushing yards, 3,207 receiving yards and 52 total TDs in 85 career games, all with the Eagles.
