Yi: “What I Do is Defend and Rebound”
August 15, 2008, 8:59 am Buried in an Agence France Presse report on Olympic basketball is Yi Jianlian’s own explanation for his lack of offensive production so far. “We have Yao for our offence,” Yi said. “We just pass the ball to him and let him shoot within his range. What I do is defend and rebound.” Yi is the Olympics’ fourth leading rebounder, at 7.7 per, same as his scoring average. China plays Germany at 8 a.m. EDT Saturday.

Wow that's all he does? What a bum! Trade him for Malik Allen!

So, to anyone who has watched his games: does he really defend well, or at all?

That's because he's Yao... one of the best big men in the game.

Yi is and will be a good player, but you guys are so goddamned defensive about him it is unreal. Just relax. He'll be fine.
From what I've seen of him in the NBA, which is all that is relevant, he looks to be an average defender for a young big.

pegs i have personally watched the game vs angola and parts of spain... he definately rebounds and defends... he always has his hands up... and there are numerous times well he will deflect a pass and his teammate will get the steal... and with boards he works hard for positionin... cant wait for him to join the nets in trainin camp

Why thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I think if this is the case for Yi, it should be a positive learning experience for him, and should help him a lot.

I think Rod should be happy with what he sees in the Olympics, if that's the case on a game-by-game basis.

Plus on boards he jumps high to get the board, like Dwight Howard does, then he snatches and pulls it in hard.

Its probably not a good idea to define yourself as a specialist so earlier in your career. He is basically asking to be paid nothing more than the MLE later on. Every team has different roles for each player, so in the NBA he will probably be more of a scorer.

He's talking about in the Olympics, not in the NBA.

I know, that's why I said that in the NBA he will probably be more of a scorer. It really doesn't matter though. He himself said that his game against team USA was basically his debut. This should be a time for him to show what he can do.
