Well Bolt is in the more interesting event to me, but Phelps' body of work is too much to dismiss.

Phelps is dominant, Bolt is a specialist.

Isn't winning the most events the definition of most dominant?

Phelps is 8/8, and is statistically the winingest Olympian of all time.

He now has 14 gold medals for the olympics, and will probably win at least 2 to 4 more in London when they hold the olympics in 2012.

When bringing in other events like world championships and pan pacific championships, Phelps has won 40 gold medals, six silver and two bronze.

32 world records set so far. (many times broke his own)

All of this leads to GREATEST ATHLETE OF ALL TIME

I have too much respect for the NFL/NBA /etc. to agree. :]

He's a legend for sure though... I've always respected Mark Spitz too.
