Rheinecker shuts down Mariners in first game of doubleheader

TEXAS 2, SEATTLE 1 (1st Game)
ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Rheinecker is worth 19 points inscrabble. However, the Seattle Mariners managed just one offthe Texas Rangers lefthander on Tuesday.

John Rheinecker threw seven solid innings and Marlon Byrd had apair of hits and an RBI as the Rangers defeated the Mariners,2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader.

The 28-year-old Rheinecker (1-0) limited the Mariners to oneunearned run and five hits with four strikeouts in just hissecond start of the season.

It was in stark contrast to his only other start against Detroiton June 5 when he allowed four runs and seven hits in threeinnings.

"I definitely took care of the energy problem I had in my firstouting," said Rheinecker.

"I was too amped when I went out there and was trying to throwthrough the catcher's chest protector. Today, I was taking someoff my fastball and I think that's what I've got to do up herewhen situations get into crunch time. It's not about throwingharder, it's about easing off."

With the Rangers demoting Robinson Tejeda to Class AAA Oklahomaon Monday, Texas has an opening for a fifth starter in theirrotation and Rheinecker served notice that he deservesconsideration.

"He's not officially No. 5 but we've got a second game and he'sstill on the roster. We're not making a move right now, sowe'll see how it goes," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. After Seattle took an early lead in the first on a RBI groundoutby Adrian Beltre, Texas answered with runs in the fourth andfifth to take a 2-1 lead and Rheinecker made it stand up.

With two outs in the fourth, Sammy Sosa doubled to left fieldoff Mariners starter Ryan Feierabend (1-4) and scored as Byrdtripled to left-center for his 34th RBI since joining theRangers on May 26.

"A couple of pitches were not the greatest tonight," saidFeierabend. "The triple to Byrd was a change that was supposedto be away but it cut inside."

Despite the solid effort, Feierabend was optioned to Class AAATacoma after the game.

"I thought Feierabend did a really nice job out there," saidSeattle manager John McLaren. "The margin has kind of beenrazor thin out there and the pitchers don't have a lot of roomfor error because we're not scoring runs. Ryan representedhimself well out there tonight."

Joaquin Benoit allowed the tying run to reach with two outs inthe eighth, when he walked Beltre and threw a wild pitch, but hestruck out Richie Sexson to get out of trouble.

Eric Gagne, who nearly squandered a four-run lead on Monday, worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to record his 15thsave in 16 chances as the Rangers handed the Mariners theirfourth straight loss.
