IT was a big week for former Hackney White Heat product Pops Mensah-Bonsu last week, as the 24-year-old guard, signed a one year deal for Spanish club Badalona and made his Great Britain debut, all in seven days!

Mensah-Bonsu, formerly with the Dallas Mavericks, claimed there was interest in his availability from NBA clubs - the Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, LA Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies.

"But as a player I'm not a major part of the puzzle, I'm just a piece, so it was difficult for me to get the deal I wanted in the USA,'' he says.

Instead, he's opted for Spain's ACB League, after a year with Italian outfit Benetton Treviso.

Last midweek, Mensah-Bonsu was called into the GB team for his debut when the team played their opening fixture against Belgium in a four-team tournament in Cagliari, Italy, as part of their preparations for next month's European Championships.

He played in an 80 point to 64 victory, but GB's 10 match unbeaten record was ended just two nights later, when they had to give best to Estonia, 77-70 in the second match of the series.

Britain are without their star player for the four game series, the Chicago Bulls' Luol Deng, wasn't cleared to play due a wrangle over an insurance policy.

I'm confused as to why Portland would be inquiring about him. I'm sure if they were it was merely for a training camp invitation. And did anyone else find it funny they called him a guard?
