'Don't Judge My Game On Goals Alone', Says Rooney Great to see that he doesn't care if he's the leading scorer or how many goals he has scored.
LOL @ post above. Rooney's game is not all about goals - FACT. Did you know that last season in the Premiership, the only games United lost were games without Rooney? They coped fine when Ronaldo was out (granted, not so well this year) but could not cope as well without their workhorse Rooney. He draws attention from defenders, he has the work rate like no other, he can spot openings for others and is unselfish. He should score more goals, but not at the expense of assists; which are, after all, just as important as goals for without assists where would the goals come from? For the most part, United don't really play with "strikers" in the traditional sense. Rooney spends a lot of time on the wings rather than through the middle, and they basically have a roaming, interchangeable front 3 or 4 depending on the squad chosen. It is a new breed of system that focuses on passing and speed and requires players to work incredibly hard. If I could choose one player to keep out of Rooney and Ronaldo, it would be Rooney every time. The goals will come, but they are just one part of his game, and the others are equally important.
England don't play in a way that suits Rooney. He has to play off the back of a striker or as part of a fluid system as at United. England are very rigid and don't have a strong target man for him to play off. He works hard, but there's not a lot that can be done as a result of the system played.
"Don't judge my game on goals alone" ... because I don't score any. Sorry, just had to fill in the silence after that comment.
I agree about this for Wayne Rooney because he isn't even a pure striker. He is a second striker and plays a different role. He doesn't possess the skills to be a pure striker. This is also applies to Andrei Arshavin, Alessandro Del Piero and many others. Players like Fernando Torres and Maksim Shatskikh on the other hand are pure strikers and some other rare players can play both successfully.
