Skyler Green showed the Saints enough this offseason to earn a spot on his hometown team's practice squad. The receiver/return specialist from Marrero and LSU was one of six players signed to the practice squad Sunday, joining running back Lynell Hamilton, tight end Buck Ortega, guard Tim Duckworth, defensive end Josh Savage and linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar. The Saints have two spots left to fill on the nine-man practice squad, which also includes tailback Jermaine Allen, who is part of the team's international development program. Green, who turns 28 later this month, is still trying to find a home in the NFL after being drafted in the fourth round by the Dallas Cowboys in 2006. He bounced around from the practice squad to the active roster in both Dallas and Cincinnati before signing with the Saints in January. Chuck Cook/The Times-PicayuneLynell Hamilton, left, got a chance to stay on the Saints practice squad. Green's best opportunity to make the Saints' active roster would have been as their primary return specialist. But he was unable to outshine guys like Lance Moore, Pierre Thomas and Tracy Porter enough during training camp and the preseason. He returned six punts for 42 yards (7.0 average) and four kickoffs for 80 yards (20.0 average) during the preseason. He also caught two passes for 36 yards. Savage, 27, probably has the best chance to earn a promotion to the Saints' active roster since they are thin at the defensive end position and they were impressed by his performance during the summer. He spent most of last season on the Saints' practice squad and appeared in one game in Week 16 against Philadelphia. He has played in 13 games during his four-year NFL career. Duckworth, 25, spent all of last season on the New Orleans' practice squad, and Ortega, 26, joined him there for the final five weeks of 2007. Hamilton, 23, and Dunbar, 23, both signed with the Saints as rookie free agents following this year's draft. Dunbar finished third on the team with 16 tackles in the preseason, plus four more on special teams. Hamilton rushed for 76 yards on 24 preseason carries and caught three passes for 29 yards. http://blog.nola.com/saintsbeat/2008/08/saints_sign_six_to_practice_sq.html
Skyler Green was a Parcells 4th round pick in Dallas. He didn't pan out. Incredibly raw as a WR. Maybe you guys can get something out of him... but he strikes me as a career kick/punt return guy.
