I thought that was the plan all along, wasn't it? If Sir Alex retires in two years, that's the off-season of the World Cup. Most national managers only go through one World Cup cycle anyway.
I understand that the reason he left United is because the board wouldn't guarantee that he would be the next United manager, but I believe that he should be. I think that was their intention, but they didn't want to guarantee that to him. Hopefully they do it anyway.
