If you could only have 1 stud player for your team's defensive backfield, would you rather that player be a safety or a cornerback? Why?

[drunken post] I'd say safety because they're more multi-dimensional. They play against the pass, the run, give support to the CBs, play in the box, play in the secondary, etc. [/drunken post]

    CB.

If he was elite, I wouldn't need to roll coverages.... I could leave him in 1 on 1 coverage more often... which would allow me to roll coverages the other way, stop the run, blitz, etc.

CB is becoming more and more important in the game...

Not quite to the level of QB, LT, pass rusher... but close.

I can understand why someone would pick safety because they can help with the run and the pass but I'd go with corner. If they can shutout their #1 WR, then that would mean there will be one less player the defense has to worry about.

to answer this question, I need to know one thing....does the team run a Cover-2 or a traditional coverage package?

If the defense is the cover-2 like in Tampa or Chicago, I want the safety....that defense is designed to restrict down the field passing and has a very defined weakness, the deep seam between the safeties....if one of my safeties is a real stud, he can minimize that liability with his ability to cover ground....corners in that defense are playing so much zone, they dont need to be that talented....In Chicago's 46, I also want the safety....the free safety in that defense plays almost exclusive cover 1, responsible for the entire deep portion of the field, he needs to be amazing or he becomes a liability....

If its a traditonal 4-3 like the Ravens played during their Super Bowl run, I want the CB....that defense uses bigger interior lineman to clog rushing lanes and funnel plays to the LBS, but does so at the expense of the pass rush....CBs need to be able to cover man to man for longer periods of time....in a traditional 3-4, lineman also clog the middle and rely on the LBS to rush the passer....that makes for more one on one situations for the CBs, so I want the CB as well....
