Pistons Will Be Fine Despite Without Big Moves

With NBA season inching closer and closer, is the Kwame Brown deal really going to be Joe Dumars’ biggest move of the offseason?

Pistons faithful hope that Dumars biggest move is in fact firing Flip Saunders and putting Michael Curry in charge. Even Bill Davidson joked in this morning’s column by Mitch Albom that he hoped Curry would be the best coach he ever hired. (Somewhere Chuck Daly and Larry Brown are shaking their heads.) The thinking is that this team is good enough to win; it just needs a kick in the butt to get it going. And Curry is just the one to do the kicking. I’m not buying Curry as the answer, but that will have to play out.

Dumars will get some heat from some corners of Pistons nation for talking a big game and not making big moves, but that’s not how I see it. Dumars was livid after the Pistons went out meekly to the Celtics. He vowed to make changes. And he tried to make changes. That’s what everyone conveniently ignores. It’s not like he was lying in that press conference back in June. He went out and talked to other teams, trying to wrestle away a superstar player who would change the dynamic of this team. But that’s almost impossible to do. Clearly, Dumars went after Carmelo Anthony. And it seems pretty clear that he actively pursued both Baron Davis (then of Golden State) and Tracy McGrady. But the deals didn’t happen, mostly because the other team balked.

Everyone wants change. It’s a magic word. Even Barack Obama and John McCain are trying to peddle it at every corner. But sometimes change is just change, it’s not improvement. Dumars wanted to make a change, but only if it were a change for the better for the Pistons. What’s the point in taking a roster that can contend in the East (and yes, it can. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves) and breaking it up just to break it up?

The Pistons will be fine. They will contend. And if Dumars senses that they can’t, he’ll make a move. The season starts when the playoffs start here in Detroit. And the last time I checked, we still have eight months to go.

Hard to believe the only move Detroit has made was adding Kwame Brown.

Detroit is like the only team that can do this because Billups,Rip and Sheed have the best chemistry possible you could ask for.
