Texans Ready for Week 1

The Texans have to battle one of the league’s strongest defenses Sunday, but they might benefit from playing at Pittsburgh in the season opener.

They have known since spring the Steelers were their opening opponent, and the game planning started long ago.

“This is one of those games that you basically have eight months to prepare for,” quarterback Matt Schaub said. “You start watching this opponent early on in the offseason and you really get into depth into what they do. Again, it’s the first game. You can look at players all you want, but they could come out with something totally new and totally different. You always have to diagnose what they are doing early and be able to attack those things.”

The Steelers are good at disguising their defenses. But many Texans starters were able to hone in on film-watching before the preseason ended because they weren’t playing in the final preseason game.

“There really are no easy opponents in the NFL anymore, but definitely the way Pittsburgh plays its defense, the extra couple of days definitely helps us,” receiver André Davis said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to use it to our advantage and be able to pick up on some of the things they do.”
No worries

The Texans head into their season opener with concerns around the pass rush, especially after the first-team defense didn’t record one sack in the preseason and rarely hurried the opposing quarterbacks.

Left defensive end Anthony Weaver isn’t worried after the preseason.

“I’m still confident in the pass rush,” Weaver said. “You’ve got Mario Williams and N.D. Kalu, a lot of guys that can get to the passer. Right now after the preseason, guys have played a little over a game’s worth of football, so you’re taking a lot more snaps now and when it gets to the third and fourth quarter, which we haven’t really played yet. That’s when guys wear down and that’s when you get those sacks. So, the pass rush is going to come.”
Stay for practice

The Texans re-signed tackle Brandon Frye to their practice squad Thursday and released defensive tackle Gabe Long from the eight-man group. Frye had remained on the active roster until the team recently added cornerback Eugene Wilson.

Today is Go Texans Day, which means the Texans are encouraging fans to show their spirit by wearing Texans gear to work or school. Fans can enter to chance to win tickets to Liberty White Liftoff on Sept. 14 versus the Ravens by showing the most Texans spirit.
