Del Piero To Start Against Georgia

Alessandro Del Piero is almost certain to start Italy’s 2010 World Cup qualifier against Georgia on Wednesday, according to reports in Italy.

Del Piero had been struggling with a muscular injury on Thursday and Friday, and sat out the whole of last night’s win against Cyprus on the bench.

Italy’s front line of Alberto Gilardino and Luca Toni flopped terribly in the game, and Italy coach Marcello Lippi revealed earlier today that he will make wholesale changes for the Georgia clash.

“I will make many changes against Georgia, but these were already planned,” he noted.

“We're not 100 per cent fit, so playing every three days takes its toll. We need to rotate."

According to reports in Italy, it is almost 100 per cent certain that Del Piero will start the game in Udine on Wednesday night, having fully recovered from his muscular concerns.

Indeed the Juventus symbol was in fine form today in an 11-0 thrashing of a team of unemployed players at the Gradisca d’Isonzo training ground.

Del Piero scored four goals in the thumping, with Alberto Aquilani (3), Vincenzo Iaquinta (3) and the much-maligned Luca Toni grabbing the others.
