Titletown Still Loves Favre

Many in Titletown celebrated the return of football season on Sunday much as they have for years — with raucous cheers as Brett Favre and company first found the end zone. Though their applause may have belied the strange circumstances surrounding Favre’s regular-season debut as quarterback of the New York Jets, plenty of fans seemed eternally eager to cheer for No. 4.

“I’m a Brett Favre fan, and a Packers fan,” said a Favre-jersey clad Kathy Held, taking in the game at Anduzzi’s Sports Club, 1992 Holmgren Way, Ashwaubenon. “And now — I guess — a Jets fan, too.”

Held’s Jets jersey wasn’t the only one in town Sunday, the day before Favre’s No. 4 would have been retired and enshrined at Lambeau Field.

Yet on the eve of Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ first regular-season NFL start against the Minnesota Vikings, many fans agreed they could cheer for No. 4 — and look forward to a fresh start for the green and gold.

“I’m still a Packer fan — will always be a Packer fan,” said Carol Spice of De Pere, who caught the game at The Sports Corner, 500 Grant St., De Pere.

“But when Brett left, then I turned into an individual fan. … I don’t have anything against Rodgers, but if I had my ultimate dream wish, I wish Brett would still be playing with us — and that’s why I’m watching.”

Even out-of-towners who planned a trip specifically to see Favre’s jersey retired bore no ill will. Aaron Chuley traveled with two friends from Saskatchewan for Monday night’s game.

“Still love Favre,” Chuley said. “I want to see him do well this year.”

Several fans said Sunday they were pulling for Rodgers, especially because of pressure and critical comments by some naysayers.

“I hope Rodgers does phenomenal on Monday night,” said Mark Luebke, who lives near Neenah, “to shut ’em up.”
