[Rockets.com] Catching up with the Players

The new writer for Rockets.com, Jason Friedman, has been doing an excellent job this offseason interviewing Rockets personnel and getting some great content onto the official team site.

Of late, he's been tracking down various Rockets players for one-on-one interviews before training camp. As he posts them, I'll link to them here.

Catching up with Chuck Hayes

HOUSTON - Update: Twenty four hours after this story was posted, Chuck Hayes suffered a broken nose during a summer scrimmage. He underwent successful surgery Thursday afternoon. Hayes is expected to miss between four to six weeks before he is cleared to return to on-court workouts.

The draft is done. The free agent frenzy and Olympics are, too. Preseason is still more than a month away. Yep, we've officially entered hoops hibernation.

So to get you through the basketball void, Rockets.com will spend the next few weeks catching up with various members of the team to find out what they've been up to this summer. The tour begins with hardworking Chuck Hayes.

JCF: What have you been up to this summer off the basketball court?

CH: Being a father. My little man is at that stage when he gets into everything and whatever he sees somebody else do, he’s going to try it, too. He’s running me wild.

Catching up with Brent Barry

JCF: How has your summer been off the court? What do you do for fun to recharge the batteries during the offseason?

BB: I keep in good shape by chasing after a couple of boys I have at the house. That always keeps you in good condition physically and mentally. But on my own time, living in Southern California in the summer affords me the opportunity to get out, play some volleyball, surf a little bit and live some of the good life over there on the left coast. So it’s pretty healthy for me and my family to take that time off, regroup and get ready for the upcoming season.

JCF: Your first summer league game this year was against the Rockets and you really filled up the boxscore (22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists). Do you think that performance might have paved the way for you to eventually end up here?

DJ: I mean at that point I was just trying to play and have fun and impress the Suns. I thought I was going to get a chance to play there, but now I’m here and I’m glad to be here.

JCF: How’s your summer been?

RA: It’s been good. I’ve had a chance to relax coming off surgery for my ankle; it’s been good to let my body rest and heal. I stayed around basketball, running around and traveling with my AAU team that I sponsor and coach at the same time. I’ve had a blast with that.

JCF: I haven't had a chance to talk to you since Summer League in Vegas - What have you been up to since then?

AB: Things have been good. I got a lot of work in, looked at a couple tapes from summer league and have just been in the gym since then.

The comments from Brooks on Artest were encouraging.

JCF: Everybody has their preconceptions about Ron Artest as a player and person - but you've actually had a chance to be around him now for about a week. What's he really like?

AB: The reality is that, everyday, Ron works the hardest out of anybody here. He's right up there with Yao - he's a gym rat. And he's a good guy; from the time I've been here he's been real nice. Honestly, he's been real cool; smiling, laughing and joking like a regular guy.

I think he just likes the situation here. He's got Mac and Yao, and he gets to team up with them and his buddy, Rafer.

JCF: Did you have any preconceptions yourself about what he'd be like?

AB: Coming in, I thought he'd be somebody who'd be on his own little court and probably wasn't going to talk to anybody and we wouldn't really see him until game time. But, like I said, he's in here earlier than I am, he's out here getting his work in and he's looking forward to making a positive contribution to the team

JCF: First things first: I gotta tell you - I get more emails about you and your comeback from injury than I do about any other player on the team. It's unreal. Do you have any idea how many people are interested in you and how you're doing?

SF: I think it's because this is where I began my career. I've grown to love Houston, the Rockets and everybody. And it's overwhelming and it feels great knowing that I have the opportunity to make this team better.

JCF: How's your summer been? What have you been doing outside of basketball?

JD: Basically I just go to the movies a lot. I went the other day to see that new Samuel L. Jackson movie, Lakeview Terrace. On my off time, that's all I'm doing is going to the movies and watching old school basketball guys like Dennis Rodman - you know, the great rebounders - so I can get a knack for rebounding in the league.
