Teddy Sheringham believes Tottenham have found the 'Famous Five'

Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham believes that after a search lasting 14 years, eight managers and countless millions, Spurs may finally have found worthy heirs to Ossie Ardiles’s 'Famous Five'.

The little Argentine manager lit up the nascent Premier League by coupling the guile and flair of Darren Anderton, Nicky Barmby and Ilie Dumitrescu with the striking prowess of Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Now, thanks to Juande Ramos’s summer shopping spree, White Hart Lane can at last look forward to another side cast in the club’s tradition of stylish, attack-minded play.

For Klinsmann, read Roman Pavlyuchenko. Giovani Dos Santos, the Mexican winger, and Aaron Lennon take the wide roles of Dumitrescu and Anderton. In the centre, Barmby and Sheringham’s creative mantle passes to Luka Modric and David Bentley.

According to Sheringham, if all goes to plan, the only difference will be that the current crop is not quite as porous at the back as the original 1994 vintage.

He said: “Spurs fans demand a certain style of football and if everyone clicks and settles in then this team has more than enough ability to deliver it.

“They will take time to gel because some of them have come from so far away. Eastern Europeans and Latin Americans need a while to get used to the game here. It may not be until after Christmas that they are all playing at their full potential.

“But there is a really nice balance to the team if it all works as it should. It could be very exciting. For me, the most interesting prospect is how Bentley can progress. He’s got the talent to be very special and I’m looking forward to seeing if he can fulfil it.”

At his former side Sevilla, Ramos developed a reputation as one of the boldest coaches in the world, his full backs tirelessly raiding forward when any other manager would be tempted to batten down the hatches and secure three points.

It is Luka Modric who the Spaniard expects to infuse that spirit into his new-look Spurs side. The Croatian playmaker is the pivot of Ramos’s system, charged with orchestrating the play from deep. It is a role Modric’s international team-mate Vedran Corluka is confident the diminutive midfielder will thrive in.

Corluka, signed for £8 million from Manchester City, said: “Luka is so comfortable with the ball. We will all see how good he is this season. It is hard for me to find the words in English to describe how good he is.

“He is one of the main reasons I wanted to come here. We talked a lot about Spurs when we were with the national team. He is my best friend – we played together at Dinamo Zagreb from the age of 14, even going on loan to Bosnia together.

“Luka was one reason, but the most important thing is to have a manager who wants you. In life, every day you want to be better, and that is what Juande can do. He has two Uefa Cups and a Carling Cup. He can make me a better player.”
