    Howard bails out bullpen, lifts Phils past Nationals

    <h3>PHILADELPHIA 7, WASHINGTON 5 (14 INNINGS)</h3>PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies continuedtheir winning ways at home. It just took a little longer thanexpected.


    Ryan Howard crushed a two-run home run in the 14th inning tolead the Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the WashingtonNationals.


    Philadelphia recorded its fifth consecutive win, tying a seasonhigh, despite blowing a two-run lead in the ninth and failing tocapitalize on a number of opportunities in extra innings.

    Chase Utley walked to start the bottom of the 14th and Howardfollowed up with his blast into the second deck in right fieldoff of Chris Booker (0-1). It was the 28th homer of the seasonfor Howard and the second walk-off shot of his career. Thereigning National League MVP has 64 RBI in his last 54 games.

    Wes Helms drove in two runs and Cole Hamels pitched seveneffective innings as Philadelphia built a 4-2 lead after eight.

    Antonio Alfonseca came on in the ninth for Philadelphia and gotAustin Kearns to foul out to first to open the frame beforerunning into trouble. He allowed doubles to Ryan Church andTony Batista around a walk to Brian Schneider before beinglifted.


    The double by Batista plated Church to make it 4-3 and spelledthe end for Alfonseca. Mike Zagurski came in with runners onthe second and third with one out and promptly gave up a doubleto pinch hitter Jesus Flores that gave the Nationals a 5-4 lead.

    It looked like the Phillies were destined to give one away whenNationals closer Chad Cordero got two quick outs in he ninth butthe Phillies caught a break.


    Jimmy Rollins hit a liner to left-center and left fielder Churchand center fielder Ryan Langerhans, a defensive replacement whojust entered the game, both went for the ball. It bounced offChurch's glove and Rollins was at third when Church's throw gotaway from shortstop Felipe Lopez. Rollins beat Lopez's throwhome to tie the game, 5-5.


    Philadelphia actually got a strong outing from reliever ClayCondrey (4-0), who tossed three scoreless innings.

    "Howard made it well worth waiting," Phillies manager CharlieManuel said. "I don't know what to say. The game had everythingbut a fight."

    "A lot of things went on," Nationals manager Manny Acta said."We couldn't catch a fly ball. We couldn't hit a relay man andit cost us."


    "I lost the game," Church said. "That's all I've got to say."

    Philadelphia actually got a strong outing from reliever ClayCondrey (4-0), who tossed three scoreless innings.

    Hamels scattered six hits and allowed two runs with a walk andsix strikeouts.


    Washington grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on arun-scoring single by Lopez.


    Philadelphia answered with three runs in the fourth off starterMatt Chico. Chico issued a bases-loaded walk to Pat Burrell toforce in the tying run before Helms followed with a two-runsingle.


    Aaron Rowand's two-out, RBI double in the fifth gave thePhillies a 4-1 edge before Ronnie Belliard led off the sixthwith a home run to cut the deficit to 4-2.


    The Phillies have won four of five home meetings against theNationals this year.
